4. I don't think I included that one - but thanks for bringing this up.
The articles will vary in their take on the speech, but I think it's important to include them anyway. A clearly biassed article is something we should be aware of - and a prompting for a LTTE.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/

GORE LAUNCHES BRUISING ATTACK ON BUSH

<snip>

"The strongly worded speech makes Mr Gore the most prominent political figure in America to weigh in on the wiretapping scandal. Mr Gore, who lost the 2000 election to Mr Bush following the intervention of the supreme court, also went further than other Democratic critics in accusing the president of wrongdoing."

Something you won't read in the US CORP MEDIA. SG

Noticed that Hillary has finally joined the anti-nazi, anti-bush brigade but too late for the Presidency - we need to give Al Gore the term he earned.

Today's Countdown email newsletter:

Subject: Suits Against Domestic Spying
Date: January 17, 2006 12:45:42 PM EST

------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

Two leading civil rights groups filed lawsuits today against the Bush administration over its domestic spying program to determine whether the operation was used to monitor 10 defense lawyers, journalists, scholars, political activists and other Americans with ties to the Middle East. The two lawsuits are the first major court challenges to the eavesdropping program. They were filed separately by the American Civil Liberties Union in Federal District Court in Detroit, and by the Center for Constitutional Rights in Federal District Court in Manhattan. Both groups are seeking to have the courts order an immediate end to the program, which the groups say is illegal and unconstitutional. The Bush administration has strongly defended the legality and necessity of the surveillance program, and officials said the Justice Department would probably oppose the lawsuits on national security grounds. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/17/politics/17cnd-nsa.html

Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann broadcasts LIVE at 8 pm et, and the count is never complete without you. Join us.

In the anxious months after the Sept. 11 attacks, the National Security Agency began sending a steady stream of telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and names to the F.B.I. in search of terrorists. The stream soon became a flood, requiring hundreds of agents to check out thousands of tips a month. But virtually all of them, current and former officials say, led to dead ends or innocent Americans. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/17/politics/17spy.html?hp&ex=1137560400&en=998d7190aee080f7&ei=5094&partner=homepage

The White House accused former Vice President Al Gore of hypocrisy Tuesday for his assertion that President Bush broke the law by eavesdropping on Americans without court approval. McClellan said the Clinton-Gore administration had engaged in warrantless physical searches, and he cited an FBI search of the home of CIA turncoat Aldrich Ames without permission from a judge. He said Clinton's deputy attorney general, Jamie Gorelick, had testified before Congress that the president had the inherent authority to engage in physical searches without warrants. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10891443

House Republicans moved to seize the initiative for ethics reform Tuesday with a comprehensive package of changes designed to curb abuses between lawmakers and lobbyists. Democrats, who have adopted a "culture of corruption" theme in a drive to oust Republicans from control of Congress, intend to unveil this week a proposed ban on lobbyists' gifts to lawmakers. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/1153AP_Congress_Ethics.html

Sen. Hillary Clinton on Monday blasted the Bush administration as "one of the worst" in U.S. history and compared the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to a plantation where dissenting voices are squelched. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10889047

Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 05:37 PM by Nothing Without Hope
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2374586
thread title (1-17-06 GD-P): Raw Story: Gore Hits Back

Excerpt from Gore:

RAW STORY

In response to White House comments that Gore exhibited "hypocrisy" in calling for a Special Prosecutor, saying that the Clinton administration had wiretapped some Americans, Gore will make this statement shortly. It was leaked to RAW STORY in advance.

GORE:

"The Administration's response to my speech illustrates perfectly the need for a special counsel to review the legality of the NSA wiretapping program.

The Attorney General is making a political defense of the President without even addressing the substantive legal questions that have so troubled millions of Americans in both political parties.

There are two problems with the Attorney General's effort to focus attention on the past instead of the present Administration's behavior. First, as others have thoroughly documented, his charges are factually wrong. Both before and after the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act was amended in 1995, the Clinton/Gore Administration complied fully and completely with the terms of the law.

Second, the Attorney General's attempt to cite a previous administration's activity as precedent for theirs - even though factually wrong - ironically demonstrates another reason why we must be so vigilant about their brazen disregard for the law. If unchecked, their behavior would serve as a precedent to encourage future presidents to claim these same powers, which many legal experts in both parties believe are clearly illegal.

The issue, simply put, is that for more than four years, the executive branch has been wiretapping many thousands of American citizens without warrants in direct contradiction of American law. It is clearly wrong and disrespectful to the American people to allow a close political associate of the president to be in charge of reviewing serious charges against him.

The country needs a full and independent investigation into the facts and legality of the present Administration's program."

Now let's see if the media carry his clear rebuttal of the WH statement. Keith Olbermann will be reporting on the WH comments tonight (see previous post). I'll email this Raw Story article with the Gore rebuttal to him - it would be helpful if more of you do the same:
KOlbermann@msnbc.com
Chances are, KO will allow Gore to rebut the WH comments anyway - it's the way he works - but I'd like to make sure he knows that Gore says the WH statement is a lie and can doubtless prove it.

TRANSCRIPT of Gonzales' smear job on the Larry King show:
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0601/16/lkl.01.html

VIDEO clips of Gonzales' CNN lies in Windows and Quicktime formats are linked to a the C&L post (The first link above)

This C & L post also points out that Gonzales' remarks are rebutted by James Risen:

RISEN: There was a--he mentioned the Aldrich Ames case in I think it was 1994 or '93 while the investigation of Aldrich Ames, who was a Soviet spy, was ongoing. Janet Reno authorized a physical search of Ames' house without a search warrant.

Under the FISA -- under the rules at that time the attorney general could authorize a warrantless physical search of a house. After the Ames case, it's my understanding that Congress changed that and closed that loophole and so that now that kind of search couldn't be done under the law.

Wordie is right (see posts upthread)- Larry King really should have Gore on his show to set the record straight after Gonzales used that venue to LIE. Let's suggest it, eh?

A VIDEO clip of part of this is posted upthread in Reply #33

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/10907262
OLBERMANN: The White House, meantime, making no secret that it monitored the remarks of former Vice President Al Gore yesterday, the attorney general, Alberto Gonzales, claming the Clinton-Gore administration conducted its own warrantless searches. The “Oh, yes, you did it, too,” defense.

Although it appears Mr. Gonzales cited a supposedly illegal search from 1993, even though the law that would have made that search illegal was not passed until 1995.

Mr. Gore, disputing Gonzales‘ remarks as not merely factually wrong but also diversionary, saying in a statement today, “The administration‘s response to my speech illustrates perfectly the need for a special counsel to review the legality of the NSA wiretapping program. The attorney general is making a political defense of the president without even addressing the substantive legal questions that have so troubled millions of Americans in both political parties.”

Mr. Gore‘s charges dovetailing with those of another prominent occupant of the Clinton White House. The only question: when Democrats attack, does anybody other than the Democratic Party sustain any losses? Keeping score for us tonight, our chief White House correspondent, David Gregory.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DAVID GREGORY, NBC NEWS CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): They are two of the nation‘s most high profile Democrats, now taking aim at the White House.

Senator Hillary Clinton told a largely African-American audience in New York yesterday that the administration is one of the worst in U.S. history. As for the Republicans in Congress?

CLINTON: When you look at the way the House of Representatives has been run, it has been run like a plantation, and you know what I‘m talking about.

GREGORY: That, hours after former Vice President Al Gore in Washington accused the president of repeatedly breaking the law by authorizing wiretaps on Americans.

AL GORE, FORMER VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: A president who breaks the law is a threat to the very structure of our government.

GREGORY: Condemning both attacks at the White House today, the president‘s spokesman singled out Gore.

SCOTT MCCLELLAN, WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY: If he‘s going to be the voice of the Democratic Party on national security matters, we welcome it. We look forward to the discussion.

GREGORY (on camera): What‘s clear is that campaigning for next year‘s midterm election is under way, with both sides settling into a political strategy.

MARSHALL WITTMAN, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST: Democrats at this stage want to portray an administration that doesn‘t allow any dissent, that‘s overreaching and that‘s basically incompetent.

GREGORY (voice-over): The other theme, say Democratic strategist, corruption. From wiretapping to tainted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, the president and his party no longer play by the rules.

But questions about domestic spying have allowed Mr. Bush to emphasize what polls show is his greatest strength: fighting the war on terror.

GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: They attacked us before. They will attack us again if they can. And we‘re going to do everything we can to stop them.

GREGORY: Attack and counterattack. Washington‘s election year war of words has begun.

David Gregory, NBC News, the White House.

Who Will Stand Up for the Constitution?

By BOB HERBERT
Published: January 19, 2006

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."-BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

"Those who expect to reap the blessing of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it."
-THOMAS PAINE

Al Gore offered a civics lesson this week for anyone willing to listen. Speaking at Constitution Hall in Washington, the former vice president said:

"As we begin this new year, the executive branch of our government has been caught eavesdropping on huge numbers of American citizens and has brazenly declared that it has the unilateral right to continue without regard to the established law enacted by Congress to prevent such abuses."

Americans do not seem especially concerned about this incredible affront to the integrity of the government and the rule of law. The attitude of a slender majority seems to be that if the likes of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney see fit to dismantle the heretofore sacred system of checks and balances, so be it.

(snip)

I find it peculiar that an awful lot of Americans who would be outraged by the burning of the American flag are positively sanguine about the trampling of the Constitution.

One of the ugliest aspects of the Bush administration is the outright deceit that is such a major aspect of its modus operandi. Tens of thousands of men, women and children are tragically dead because of the war in Iraq, which was launched from a monstrous superstructure of deceit. Why wouldn't we expect the administration to deceive the public about the illegal spying of the National Security Agency?
