The Wit and Wisdom of Harry S Truman
"Carry the battle to them. Don't let them bring it to you. Put them on the defensive. And don't ever apologize for anything."

"When you get to be president, there are all those things, the honors, the twenty-one gun salutes, all those things. You have to remember it isn't for you. It's for the Presidency." (remember that Georgie)

"There is nothing new in the world except the history you do not know."

"Most of the problems a president has to face have their roots in the past."

"It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit."

"I sit here all day trying to persuade people to do things they ought to have the sense to do without my persauding them. That's all the powers of the president amount to."

"A president either is constantly on top of events or, if he hesitates, events will soon be on top of him. I never felt I could let up for a single moment."

"Take a two-mile walk every morning before breakfast."

"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear."

"I never did give them hell. I just told the truth, and they thought it was hell."

"Whenever a fellow tells me he's bipartisan, I know he's going to vote against me."

"Experience has shown how deeply the seeds of war are planted by economic rivalry and social injustice."

"I've said many a time that I think the Un-American Activities Committee in the House of Representatives is the most Un-American thing in America."

"Richard Nixon is a no-good, lying bastard. He can lie out of both sides of his mouth at the same time, and if he ever caught himself telling the truth, he'd lie just to keep his hand in."

1. Despite what some historical revisionists try to do, Truman was a great
president and a great man in general. I would have carried shit for that man.

4. I've been re-reading McCulloughs' biography
of Harry Truman. He's certainly my favorite 20th century president.

6. Years ago there was a one man show on PBS
I think it was PBS. It was a male actor being
Truman. It was fantastic. I think it was called
Give 'em Hell, Harry.

I wish they would show it again
