Group to fly abortion billboards over city
More wonderful news from the nation's heartland.

<<snip>>
A group opposing abortion plans to fly "billboards" of aborted fetuses over Dayton Monday through Friday.

The pictures will be on streamers 35 feet by 100 feet. They're dramatic "because abortion is dramatic," said Mark Harrington, executive director of the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform Midwest.

Harrington spoke from the organization's Columbus office. The Dayton flyovers are part of a project to fly banners over Ohio's skies until the Nov. 7 election.>>

The group plans to fly these things over places where "people congregate." Trouble is, in this part of Ohio, there's not a whole lot of congregatin' going on (except in the churches) because jobs are leaving the area on almost a daily basis. But surely THAT isn't a prime issue for discussion during the upcoming election. Oh, no, of course not.

I find this kind of anti-abortion propaganda abhorrent, and I think it does the "pro-life" cause MUCH more harm than good. The photo accompanying the story in this morning's paper shows a plane flying a banner depicting a "10-week abortion." This reduces the whole issue to a carny freak show, which adds nothing to the discussion.

2. The traffic jams on I-270 and I-71 in Columbus ought to provide a
captive audience for their fly-over banners. It'll also backfire on them, hopefully.

8. Yep ... someone should fly banners with pix of homeless kids, hungry kids
... kids without social services because of the "we'll force you to have the baby, and then you're ON YOUR OWN" attitude of the fundies.

5. They're paying for it.
If people don't like it, they can complain to the billboard company. However, a bunch of complaints will only prove the effectiveness of the billboard as advertising. Maybe that will raise the price on them, but it probably won't get them to pull it. Perhaps the best response would be a counter-campaign of billboard ads, though I'm not sure what those should be.

6. What gets me is the outright cynicism....
...that passes for compassion, especially in Ohio. We've got a shitload of problems in this state -- economy, schools, dipshits at the statehouse -- but what galvanizes the populace? Abortion and gay marriage. These groups are more than happy to feed that ignorance -- someone else can take care of the babies.

As Lewis Black says, it's enough to make your head explode.

7. It's a trick...get an axe.
It's BECAUSE you're all neck-deep in those problems that abortion and gay marriage are targeted, as they are the things most of the people aren't having to deal with personally. We, as humans, scapegoat the people and things that are the most different. We don't want to be able to relate to the object of our irrational hatred. Groups like the ones doing this ad campaign, as well as any cult, advertising agency or government psy-ops know this and take advantage of it.

Lewis Black, by the way, is funny as hell.
