The Nexus of Politics and Terror (Keith Olbermann)

Secaucus - Last Thursday on Countdown, I referred to the latest terror threat - the reported bomb plot against the New York City subway system - in terms of its timing. President Bush’s speech about the war on terror had come earlier the same day, as had the breaking news of the possible indictment of Karl Rove in the CIA leak investigation.

I suggested that in the last three years there had been about 13 similar coincidences - a political downturn for the administration, followed by a “terror event” - a change in alert status, an arrest, a warning.

We figured we’d better put that list of coincidences on the public record. We did so this evening on the television program, with ten of these examples. The other three are listed at the end of the main list, out of chronological order. The contraction was made purely for the sake of television timing considerations, and permitted us to get the live reaction of the former Undersecretary of Homeland Security, Asa Hutchinson.

We bring you these coincidences, reminding you, and ourselves here, that perhaps the simplest piece of wisdom in the world is called “the logical fallacy.” Just because Event “A” occurs, and then Event “B” occurs, that does not automatically mean that Event “A” caused Event “B.”

But one set of comments from an informed observer seems particularly relevant as we examine these coincidences.

On May 10th of this year, after his resignation, former Secretary of Homeland Security Ridge looked back on the terror alert level changes, issued on his watch.

Mr. Ridge said: “More often than not we were the least inclined to raise it. Sometimes we disagreed with the intelligence assessment. Sometimes we thought even if the intelligence was good, you don’t necessarily put the country on (alert)… there were times when some people were really aggressive about raising it, and we said ‘for that?’”

Please, judge for yourself....

7. Is there any indication that these "coincidences" even help him...
anymore or have they played this card so many times that these alerts fall on deaf ears?

10. My good ness, it's catching.

Well, turns out the Holland Tunnel wasn't the target after all, according to the NYT. But what does that matter?

Representative Peter T. King, the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, said today that even though the Holland Tunnel was not the target this time, the tunnel has been a target of terrorists before, including a plot against the Hudson River tunnels and other New York landmarks uncovered after the World Trade Center bombing in 1993.

By that logic, we'd better keep a close eye on, say, Pearl Harbor.

Think it's time to compare the number of announced terrorism cases in pre-election 2004, post-election 2005, and, now, pre-election 2006?

Oh yeah! And time to issue more of our predictions about the inevitable "terror threat" incidents, plots disrupted, attacks thwarted sorts of news stories yet to be put out in this election year by Bush admin officials. I don't think they've learned their lesson yet, and we must keep in mind they are truly desperate to find SOME WAY to regain the hold on so many Americans that they've clearly lost.

I'll bet they thought for sure that these two recent "plot disruptions" and busts, along with the padded background info they've issued in the stories, would shock-and-awe U.S. citizens right back into their big ol' fraidy fold.

Wonder what the real "dangerous plotters" (the ones in this administration!) are thinking now? heh heh Reckon a little bit of handwringing is going on behind the scenes?

11. Fabulous segment !
I remember when it was originally broadcast, which was just a month after his stirring Katrina/BushCo smack down:

For many of this country's citizens, the mantra has been — as we were taught in Social Studies it should always be — whether or not I voted for this President — he is still my President. I suspect anybody who had to give him that benefit of the doubt stopped doing so last week. I suspect a lot of his supporters, looking ahead to '08, are wondering how they can distance themselves from the two words which will define his government — our government — "New Orleans."

For him, it is a shame — in all senses of the word. A few changes of pronouns in there, and he might not have looked so much like a 21st Century Marie Antoinette. All that was needed was just a quick "I'm not satisfied with my government's response." Instead of hiding behind phrases like "no one could have foreseen," had he only remembered Winston Churchill's quote from the 1930's. "The responsibility," of government, Churchill told the British Parliament "for the public safety is absolute and requires no mandate. It is in fact, the prime object for which governments come into existence."

In forgetting that, the current administration did not merely damage itself — it damaged our confidence in our ability to rely on whoever is in the White House.

As we emphasized to you here all last week, the realities of the region are such that New Orleans is going to be largely uninhabitable for a lot longer than anybody is yet willing to recognize. Lord knows when the last body will be found, or the last artifact of the levee break, dug up. Could be next March. Could be 2100. By then, in the muck and toxic mire of New Orleans, they may even find our government's credibility.

Somewhere, in the City of Louisiana.

13. So glad I caught this thread. What I've noticed is the
"deafening silence," in terms of the public's reaction to both of the latest "disrupted terror attack plots" which this administration has trumpeted as "successes" that prove we should still be scared, very scared. Ho-f'ing-hum.

It seems from what I observe so far that Americans couldn't be less interested in hearing more about these supposedly significant events or in talking about them over the water cooler or in the grocery checkout lines. Has anyone else noticed that?

Here in red Oklahoma, instead of stories about the disastrous situation in Iraq appearing on the local news, we still get piece after piece touting the "heroism" of OK soldiers serving (and often wounded or killed) in Iraq, complete with long segments about their families. Now, I'm not saying these troops are not courageous and serving with the best of intentions, while their families do indeed support them even as they suffer. But c'mon, Channel 8 (and 6 and 9), let's have at least one or two stories about the healthy peace activism locally and maybe now and then a feature about a returning vet who is criticizing this insane occupation of Iraq (and Afghanistan too, don't forget)!

Yet even here, there hasn't been much concern about the most recent "terror scares" reflected either on the local news broadcasts or among Tulsans I encounter every day. These overblown news reports seem to be basically "non-stories" as far as listeners are concerned, and I'm getting a kick out of the way even persistent Bush supporters are so silent on this.

So I'd say I think people really must be wising up and learning to avoid embarrassing themselves more than they have already by continuing to march in tune with the expectations of the Bush Cabal. Even in Oklahoma!

Now THAT's something to "hoo-ah!" about! :D

The new trend, to my delight, seems to be: "Be patriotic! -- IGNORE obvious propaganda moves by the government and the Corporate Media spreading its lies!"

I love it!
