6. Senator Heflin died last year.
He was formerly Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court who led to a complete reorganization of the Alabama judiciary to international accalades. I used to see him at church every couple of weeks after he retired. He was a hoot! Does anyone remember pulling a pair of his wife's panties out of his jacket pocket that he had thought was a hankie?!

10. You're very welcome.
Welcome to DU! :hi: We're glad you're here! :hi:

The list is several years old. I copied and pasted it. There needs to be an update. However, it's a good starting point. Most NeoCon Rethugs are chickenhawks.

14. We have gone around on this list before
And I posted that it is decieving and a little dishonest. There a plenty of Dems who never served. There are plenty of Repubs who served, all in all the score is alot closer. Granted that there is irony in a person who has never served to call for war, but it is not unheard of (see: FDR)

16. I don't recall having ever discussed this list with you since June 8, 2006
Edited on Fri Jun-30-06 11:41 AM by CottonBear
This list includes the major political players and pundits in the US.

Exactly what is "decieving and a little dishonest" about the list?

We are not talking about FDR or WWI or WWII, we are talking about today and, more specifically, Republican chickenhawks.

12. Rush Limbaugh couldn't stop the ingrown hair follicle on his butt
from messing up his life and serving his country. I'm certain if not for that damn hair follicle, Rush would have fought and died in Vietnam. Not Fair!

15. The counterpoint to both lists in this thread...
Republicans

-John Bolton was in the National Guard during 'Nam but was not called up (not due to family connections, he was the son of a fireman)

-Bob Dole was a highly decorated war hero in WW2 earning 2 purple hearts and a bronze star.

-Ben Nighthorse Cambell, US Air Force, Korea, Air Medal (Former Dem)

-Pete Wilson, USMC 1955-58

-Barry Goldwater, USAAC/USAF, Retired as a Major General

17. Nixon & North were/are criminals.
We do not know Olberman's affiliation. In any case, pundits are in a separate category.

We are discussing current and very recent members of congress and current pundits, not retired or dead people (except for presidents).

Why does it not surprise me that John Bolton managed not to serve in combat.

Ronald Reagan is the correct spelling. Or did you mean Donald Regan?

Phil Grahm and Richard Shelby are Republicans.

as in they used to be dems, for clarity's sake.

19. You have McGovern, Glenn, and a few others on there
Who look pretty retired to me.

Ted Kennedy did a good job at not serving in Korea (In fact he spent it in Paris)

Sorry about attcking the list blindly, I see that the list has hence changed. I dont think that the "service" argument is a valid one, call a chickenhawk a chickenhawk but dont lump a party together in the "coward" category. Repubs and Dems both served honorable in the military and plenty on both sides found ways out of the service. I am sorry I was as harsh initially, I really hate this whole debate. My bad :(.

proving that this argument is kinda silly in alot of ways. honorable military service does not mean honorable political service.

22. You're right
but that is not the way the neocons play it. They expect military vets to be pro-war no matter what and go into hysterics when a vet comes out against this admin. So we like to point out that very few of the current asshats that support this Iraq debacle have any military experience. And the ones that have and are rethuglican sometimes, like in the case of Cunningham, show themselves to be less than honorable.
