22. Your kidding me? Roberts recused himself. Unbelievable.
As for Alito, no surprise there, he was the one advising the President to add a waiver to every piece of legislation he signs, declaring that the President has the authority to ignore the law and do what he wants. He wouldn't question the President's judgment on this matter.

26. Great. Let me guess what he will say...
Edited on Thu Jun-29-06 09:57 AM by tjwash
"9-11 changed America blah blah blah, Osama Bin Laden blah blah blah, fight them there so we don't fight them here blah blah blah, that's why we need more tax cuts blah blah blah, I'm the informationater gettinger feller..."

That's the point where he goes off the cue card and the "press" plants jump right in and will ask him such hard hitting questions such as:

"Mr. President. All real Americans know that we need secret detention facilities and torture camps such as Guantanamo so that your holy greatness can protect us from evil. What do you have to say to these un-american terrorist sympathizers that wish to lose the war on terror and turn Farsi into America's official language while burning the flag?"

Then he will go back on script...

As far as I can see, this just means more detention without ANY kind of trial.

12. If the Supreme Court ruled that Bush over-stepped authority..?
Is that an impeachable offense? It seems if the Supreme Court has already ruled that he acted "illegally", then there should be some punishment for it? Censure? Impeachment? Horse-whipped? Drawn and quartered?

17. What I got out of the CNN report...
The Supreme Court ruled that they can't hold military tribunals for them; that if they want to "try" somebody, they'll have to come up with new procedures or "let them go". I think Junior's legal buddies will come up with some "new procedures".

37. There was far more then that in the ruling!
The court ruled the detainees are protected by the Geneva conventions.

It ruled the the Authorization to use force passed by Congress does not give the president unlimited power.

And, it ruled they have the right to trial.

42. Thanks for the info, though I'm curious about the Geneva convention....
Where in the ruling is that stated? Don't get me wrong, that would be the answer to making this president accountable and would finally end the tactic of declaring "war" when it's convenient for presidential power, but declaring we're not at "war" when it comes to "detainees".

32. Bush will try to ignore the Court. That's my guess.

He won't be able to do it. Not many Republicans in the Congress will have the stomach for it.

Gitmo will close, the prisoners will be released. There is no evidence for trials, if there were they would have conducted them already.
