think that Keith truly understands and believes in the First Amendment...much more so than any of the rest of the media I've heard regarding this.

10. Hopefully, those little clips can put things into perspective. And now
having Roger Cressey on, saying it hasn't said anything that was a state secret and has done no damage. Cressey is usually gung-ho about counter-terrorism, so he carries weight. I usually don't agree with him.

he said it was ''counterproductive'' to put the more inside info out there, implying that the Times went too far

don't agree on that

they have their own MAGAZINE...SWIFT, that is

any terror group that could BRING DOWN The WTC and blow up the freaking pentagon is WELL aware of who's following them

ESPECIALLY when they have moles from the Saudi intel groups LEAKING inside info to them

wish they'd go into that little detail

Who here has read James Risen's "State of War?"

I think it started with Terry Schiavo but I'm not sure. Maybe it began with the harbinger of those horrible band aids at the convention. But it looks like they can't shake a wagging finger without getting it whacked.

she HAD to say what she said on what she revealed, cause it's so obvious

she took up for them, though, by saying that they're honestly outraged at the way the Times, they feel, is hindering their efforts in the WOT

that's BULLSHIT

it's TOTALLY fabricated, not 'AMPLIFIED' as you said

20. I think they took a swipe at the wrong people this time. A lot of the
media is hitting back, and that's who controls their coverage during election time. You really don't screw with the guy who owns the most ink.

The Repukes' base may love this, but I'm hoping this will boomerang on them, now that the media see what can befall any of them.

The fact that only the Times is being targeted, while the WSJ and LA Times are getting a virtual free pass on this only makes it worse. I think the media may actually grow some hair on their chest over this one.

25. I hope you're right, but like Specter, they ALWAYS back down FAST.
even when it's in their "interest"

their interest, though, remember, is financial, and that interest is tied to the junta

that's why they act the way they do

it's all about the bottom line, and they'll fall behind that line eventually. I don't think the Times of today is anywhere NEAR as independent as it was during the days of the Pentagon Papers. nor is the overall political climate. the neofascists have had thirty YEARS of bashing the lib media, and that myth pervades the electorate

I hope I'm wrong, cause they're moving to an ALL out assault

did you see the 7 page resolution they're bringing up in congress tomorrow

this is going to be a MAJOR pug campaign issue...IF they can get traction, and it's up to the spineless media whores to protect themselves, and our democracy, from them

what indication have they EVER given recently that they'll fight back?

28. I think you're exactly dead-on about it being a financial interest, and
what they're seeing is that this administration and the conservatives are more than willing to financially cripple them if it suits their political purposes.

What kind of financial impact would it have on the Times if they can't have anyone in the WH press corps?

And the resolution is going to be directed towards ALL media, correct? The Repukes are going to make ALL media the scapegoats. What will that leave? It will leave the Internet and FoxNews. Other media outlets stand to lose financially if the Repukes get to pick and chose which are the "preferred" perveyors of news.

Hopefully, they're thinking this way. Hopefully, they're realizing why someone like Keith has increasing ratings. Hopefully, they're not stupid.

And the LEAKER IN CHIEF = BUSH

September 24, 2001

"We've established a foreign terrorist asset tracking center at the Department of the Treasury to identify and investigate the financial infrastructure of the international terrorist networks.

It will bring together representatives of the intelligence, law enforcement and financial regulatory agencies to accomplish two goals: to follow the money as a trail to the terrorists, to follow their money so we can find out where they are; and to freeze the money to disrupt their actions.

We're also working with the friends and allies throughout the world to share information. We're working closely with the United Nations, the EU and through the G-7/G-8 structure to limit the ability of terrorist organizations to take advantage of the international financial systems. "

42. Tony Snow didn't know
He thought SWIFT was covert. From today's Froomkin.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/blog/2006/06/28/BL2006062801268.html

Q I guess what I'm asking is -- and I'm sorry for not being specific enough -- but is there the belief that even though terrorists had clearly been tipped off from the very beginning by the President that there was going to be an aggressive attempt to get as much financial information as possible, that they did not know about the SWIFT Bank?

"MR. SNOW: I am absolutely sure they didn't know about SWIFT. There are -- when you have key government officials around the world saying, we didn't know about it -- there may have been a lot of activity, but it is a program that was not well-known, including among people who have pretty high positions in the banking industry. So, yes, this is not the sort of thing that everybody knew."

At Friday's briefing , Snow actually mocked reporters who suggested that SWIFT was not exactly operating covertly.

"Q But the existence of this organization is no secret. . . .

"MR. SNOW: Are you kidding? Are you talking about Swift? When did you know about Swift before? . . .

"Q Let me ask a follow up. Are you saying that the financial experts in the terrorist ranks would not know about an organization that works for 7,800 different financial institutions in 200 countries?

"MR. SNOW: I'm saying, yes. I think that a lot of people didn't know about the existence of Swift."

30. Here is what SWIFT is and how it works
In my former life I managed a wire transfer operation for a major US bank. SWIFT is an organization started by international financial institutions to move funds electronically around the world. The bank I worked for moved money for its own operations and for our customers using the SWIFT network.

SWIFT has been around for at least 20 years, and was a huge advance in foreign wire transfers because it was fast, secure and used a standardized format so that banks could process transactions electronically.

SWIFT has never been a secret, and when 9-11 occurred, I automatically assumed that the CIA would be working with SWIFT to look for terrorist funding. Member banks of the SWIFT network would have a financial interest in stopping any future terrorist attacks on a financial center such as NYC.
