Woohoo! Feingold and Reid Working to Oust Sensenbrenner
Edited on Mon Jun-26-06 06:56 PM by undeterred
U.S. Senators Russ Feingold and Harry Reid have both jumped on board with Bryan Kennedy’s effort to defeat Jim Sensenbrenner this November. Feingold is confirmed to attend an August event as a special guest, and Reid is a sponsor of the event… (he may even come out and make an appearance!). There are several Congressmen/women who are also trying to get it into their schedules.

According to Kennedy’s Campaign Manager, Bridget Dooley, they are going to try to get the event webcast so that the netroots can participate!

This is exactly what the Democratic Party needs, leaders who are willing to stand up against out-of-touch politicians in districts like Jim Sensenbrenner’s (WI-5). Bryan Kennedy is a good progressive who has been working for years to get rid of Jim Sensenbrenner. Let’s join Senators Feingold and Reid as sponsors of the event.

There are several different sponsorship levels to choose from, check it out at

Please feel free to post elsewhere.

This is the campaign I'm working on and I am delighted that these Senators are giving Bryan Kennedy their support. I am doing as much on the ground as I can and recruiting volunteers, but the bottom line is we need money to reach all these voters.

6. Really love Feingold!
I'm hoping that Reid now working him is a good sign that they can start working together for *progressive* and other important efforts for the party to deal with instead of an "adversary". It's about time that the Democratic Party wakes up and *does* some things like this before November!

17. It would also help to focus dissent on his immigration bill!
If it can be shown that his own people will throw him out, then that puts into question how well the country will receive the xenophobic immigration bill he has out there, which I'm ashamed that the person that has been SUPPOSEDLY elected as my congress critter (Bilbray) has supported.

The McCain bill isn't the real answer either and we need another, but we need to show that Wisconsinites and Americans don't care for Sensenbrenner's brand of politics!

20. There is a very low percentage of non-whites in that district

Although the issue matters a lot to the rest of the country, I don't really think the people in his district care all that much about immigration. It's a long way from the Mexico border! There are some white racists who agree with him and a small hispanic population in a couple of places who disagree, but I doubt the majority of people in WI-5 feel like immigration affects them one way or the other.

Bryan Kennedy is getting some Hispanic support from outside the district, as Sensenbrenner has really made himself their enemy.

On edit: Somebody fixed up Bryan's website! Even the picture is better and doesn't make him look dorky as the other one did (open mouthed smiles do that, doncha know).

He looks quite Congressional now. Heh.

Its a conservative district. Some suburban wealth, some one-issue (i.e. abortion) voters. Our state legislature is dominated by Republicans, but somehow we've managed to elect Feingold (D), Kohl (D), and a Democratic governor. So, anything is possible.

During Kennedy's first run in 2004, he got roughly 1/3 of the vote. The raw number of votes he got in 2004 would be enough to win in a midterm election year like this, when the voter turnout is typically much lower (i.e., if Reps have low turnout and Dems have high turnout, he has a real chance.)

Kennedy is a very appealing and articulate candidate. He is a likable person, and Sensenbrenner is very gruff and impersonal. I strongly feel that people who meet Bryan Kennedy and hear him speak won't hesitate to vote for him. But I'm not sure people will turn out to vote for someone they don't know instead of someone they don't like. He really needs higher visibility. He's been a guest on some AAR shows and that helps.

Sensenbrenner is a very wealthy and well connected man, one of the most powerful figures in the House of Representatives. Its not so much that he's a bad representative (there are some issues he is ok on and he may actually represent the views of a few rich conservatives in his district), as that he has been a completely derelict chairman of the judiciary committee. He took an extreme position on the immigration issue. He is a harsh and punitive man and that carries over into his legislation. He has swung far to the right where he feels safe, and he stays there. He's done absolutely nothing to hold this corrupt administration accountable.

In working the district I don't run into a lot of people who love Sensenbrenner, but I have met a lot of people who say "I vote Republican".

14. May I suggest
for a campaign commercial: a clip of the hearings (I can't recall what they were for) where, in the middle of them speaking he cuts the mike, then walks out with a smug smile on his bloated face, then cuts the lights. Corruption, abuse of power, Bush enabler. I still can't believe he got away with that.:grr: :grr: :grr:
