ACLU Wants Boys Allowed In Cheerleading Tourney
ACLU Wants Boys Allowed In Cheerleading Tourney

POSTED: 6:43 pm EDT June 24, 2006

DETROIT -- Why now?

That's the question being asked of the ACLU by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

The ACLU wants the state athletics governing body to reconsider a policy keeping boys out of competitive cheerleading's postseason tournament.

But the rules were approved in December 2003. And an MHSAA spokesman said there was "enough time for a response to be made earlier than five weeks before those rules officially take effect."

3. Why not?
Some of the most difficult cheerleading stunts I've ever seen were from coed squads (the boys lifting up the girls, who did somersaults in midair).

7. Guys are pretty darn essential to a (very advanced) cheerleading squad

All the college cheerleading squads have guys on them...their stunts are amazing.

8. < insert snarky comment here >.........
Gee, next thing ya know, they're gonna want to be servers at hooters! :sarcasm:

Oh wait... didn't they already try that?

I don't see anything wrong with guys being cheerleaders, and they shouldn't be excluded from any official activities involved.

12. It was common in high schools in the 60s
when I grew up for mixed cheer squads. I think the ACLU is doing the right thing in challenging this state law.

BTW- I don't think it likely that BabyBush was very good at leading cheers. I can't imagine him doing anything very well - excepting blowing up frogs.

14. Modern Cheerleading can be quite athletic.
I'm sure Bush would have done badly.

Male cheerleaders will always be a minority*, but we have some in Texas--where Cheerleading is taken seriously!

* Except for Texas A&M, where 5 male Yell Leaders cheer the Aggies on. Governor Rick Perry is an ex Yell Leader!

15. I don't think the ACLU goes looking for "work"....
They help those who have requested it.

16. Once in a while...
> I don't think the ACLU goes looking for "work"....
> They help those who have requested it.

That's the general principle; they respond when asked.

Once in a while, though, an issue is so obvious, so
pressing on our constitutional rights that they go
in search of a case with which to test the issue;
several cases around the USA PATRIOT Act have been
prosecuted in this fashion.

Allowing or not allowing boys on the cheerleading
team probably ain't one of those issues, though. ;-)

17. Thanks for the info....
I agree that the cause of male cheerleaders is not the most pressing issue in the country today. But it is valid.

Thought: Perhaps some of the parents of those boys will change their perception that the ACLU is only for "leftists."

18. Maybe it's because I'm a foreign 'alien'
but the concept of cheerleaders, male or female, disturbs me... Watching World Cup football, there is nothing better than an emotional rousing rendition of an X-rated song by 30,000 drunk (or almost drunk) fans; I dare any cheerleader to replicate that kind of emotion.
