The Kelly Bundyization of the GOP (Luckovich)
I don't know how many of you watched "Married With Children". If you did, you are familar with their airhead teenage daughter, Kelly.

Al, the dad, once had an opportunity to appear on a sports-themed game show. He didn't poll well with the audience, so he arranged to have his daughter, Kelly go on in his place.

Problem was, Kelly wasn't as well versed in sports as Al. So Al spent countless hours drilling her with sports facts. Golf, basketball, baseball, soccer, bowling - you name it.

Unfortunately, Kelly's poor brain couldn't handle the overload. Consequently she had to forgo basic facts and reasoning in order to retain all the info Al was pumping into her head.

My point? I think the GOP is full of Kelly Bundy's.

I posted this thread the other day, asking for opinions about this toon:

I had forgotten all about it until I looked at yesterday's newspaper. The ENTIRE editorial page was devoted to the "controvery". The paper's editorial editor weighed in, and numerous letters were printed.

A sampling:

A slap at soldiers, veterans

I have canceled my subscription to this paper and I am encouraging everyone I know to do the same. While I am an ardent free-speech supporter, I can only take so much; then I must react. I won't repeat many of the words already written about the Luckovich cartoon. I will say that I am sorry you chose to publish it.

I am a decorated Vietnam veteran and thought that the disparagement we suffered was enough so that all the young men and women today serving the cause of freedom would be honored. But I see that is not the case. I am angry, disappointed and sad.

CALVIN COWLES, Newnan

He's a liberal who hates America

I have been reading the AJC since I was 18. I am 65 now. I have known all along the paper is far left of liberal, but you have no other choice in Atlanta. I have also known that if I ever got mad enough to cancel my subscription, it would be because of Mike Luckovich.

His cartoon of June 22 has just about convinced me the time has come. This man truly fits the description of a liberal who hates America.

JACK LANGLEY, Kennesaw

Exhibiting a complete lack of decency

I am sickened by Mike Luckovich's cartoon equating the torture carried out by al-Qaida and the actions of the U.S. military. Your moral compass is broken.

It is clear that the AJC does not find the work and courage of our brave men and women in uniform to be worthy of their respect and admiration. The cartoon never should have appeared. It shows a total disregard for common decency.

FRANK D. PARKER JR., Winder

No way to compare the two actions

When our troops wrap women's underwear around the heads of arrested terrorists in an attempt to break their resistance and thus gain valuable intelligence, the apologists label the act "torture" and we imprison the offending troops. When terrorists kidnap and literally butcher our troops, Mike Luckovich sees no difference. Pulitzer Prize or not, there is no excuse for pretending this kind of moral equivalence.

NOEL DAVIS, Newnan

Count me as a former subscriber

Note how they all sound pretty much alike.

It appears to me that the GOP is full of people whose brains are so full of talking points and bullshit rhetoric that there's very little room in their heads for common sense or alternate points of view.

If only they would dump some of that crap and let the sunshine in.

I wouldn't be surprised if one didn't find abundant crops of mushrooms growing inside their craniums.

2. Equally guilty
of some fucked-up shit.

C'mon, people...like wrapping their heads with women's underwear was the WORST thing done to these people. It wasn't. It's like saying that the worst thing Al Qeida does to Americans is call them "infidels."

These people couldn't debate their way out of an open sack.

5. "The are none so blind as those who refuse to see..."
The dozens of "heart attacks" and deaths due to "unknown causes" of the prisoners in US custody, not to mention the blood-splattered walls and blood-smeared floors in the cells of detainees tell a far darker, grimmer story than a guy on a dog leash, undies-as-hats and ass-piles. :grr:

But learning those facts might require turning off Rush or O'Reilly or the Savage Wiener for a few minutes and actually thinking for once.

Perhaps that would then lead to empathy and before you know it, these folks would start turning into...gasp....Libruls. :wow:

Good gravy. The right is populated with little but walking brain-stems, human talking points and misanthropic knuckle-dragging neanderthals.

(Apologies to the real neanderthals out there...I have seen those Geico commercials, after all...) ;)

6. Someone should point out to Noel Davis that he is guilty
of EXACTLY what the cartoon is pointing. He's claiming that some forms of torture are ok while others are not. Torture, in any form, is never acceptable. Period.

10. KELLY Bundys? I think the GOP is full of
Theodore Bundys! Most repukes have a mentality of a murderer, although few would actually go out and kill people just for the hell of it.

13. When I first moved from Texas to San Diego...
...was when I first discovered "alternative indie" free weeklies. I started reading "This Modern World" It was about 1990. At the time, TMW seemed REALLY intellectual and rather revolutionary to me, given where I came from, but now, I view it as a staple and find it to be quite obvious (although I still enjoy it very much).

These people come from that kind of an insular environment. Their minds are not trained to think in any way except for either/or, so a cartoon like this one, with subtleties, requiring a bit of thought, make their minds go haywire. "DOES NOT COMPUTE- DOES NOT COMPUTE". So instead of trying to understand what the artist is trying to say, their peabrains translate it into the closest message they can understand "He's callin' (all) the troops thugs!"

Needless to say, I'm very grateful that I got out of Texas while my mind was still young and flexible. I hate to think how I might be now had I stayed there.
