It is my hope that this movie will be a significant step toward creating a true democracy by changing the way people see themselves, this nation, and their personal responsibility to take action to improve the world.Over 1,000,000 viewers? I am extrapolating from last weekend's box office. Box office at the end of last weekend was $6.6 million. At $8 per ticket that was 825,000 attendees as of last weekend. It must be over 1,000,000 by now. :applause:
Here is what I got from "An Inconvenient Truth" --
We are the villians and the victims, and we can be the heros.I got to see the film Friday evening and I was impressed - though not nearly as much as I was when I went to see it a second time yesterday! There is so much in the movie that I did not pull it all together until I saw it a second time. Gore brings together the best science with humor, urgency, spirit, hope, and compassion. Along the way he gets you to think about: * The damage corporate media is doing to our nation. * How to approach global problems with true international perspective. * How global pandemics, like avian flu and SARS are spreading as insects and rodents have larger ranges as a result of warming. * Loss of species and habitat. * How utterly insane drilling in ANWR would be - they could only drive trucks there 75 days a year! * How global warming produces 'weird weather' floods in areas surrounded by devastating droughts. * How droughts caused by global warming are exacerbating the genocide in Darfur. * How scientists have been censored over the past 20+ years by this government (probably longer).
Global warming is not
"my issue" and, yet, here I am nudging us all to GET PEOPLE TO GO SEE "An Inconvenient Truth". Why? I am starting to understand the urgency of global warming AND
it is my hope that this movie will be a significant step toward creating a true democracy by changing the way people see themselves, this nation, and their personal responsibility to take action to improve the world. We need some selflessness - and we need it FAST!
Here is what I've done:
:redbox: I've emailed the 200+ list at my work.
:redbox: I've emailed two local progressive groups I participate in.
:redbox: I told my friend, D, about the movie and went with him yesterday - he is now going to email his lists and see if he can make an announcement in church today.
:redbox: Yesterday morning I made "film strips" ( ;-) ). I put showtimes at the local theater, three short reviews, a picture, and the website of the movie. I fit 4 strips on each page and then duplicated 50 pages for $4. I passed out over 200 film strips to advertise the movie - a few dozen directly to people, but mostly put them on cars of people who were at the farmer's market and local library.
:redbox:
I posted this thread about getting Al on OPRAH! 10,000,000 viewers at one fell swoop!AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH
www.climatecrisis.net
"It's a mind-boggling disaster epic that draws its special power from the fact that we are both the villains and victims of the story."
"I have never written these words in a movie review, but here they are: You owe it to yourself to see this film. If you do not, and you have grandchildren, you should explain to them why you decided not to."
"It's probably best to ignore the film's political subtext and simply concentrate on the message: global warming is real, we're responsible for it, and we can do something about it without ruining the U.S. economy. But we're running out of time."
More reviews here.As it says in the AIT credits:
If you pray, pray that people will find the strength to change. O8)
P.S. The first thing my friend, D. said when the credits were over: We MUST get Gore to run for President! ;-)
