1. Haven't seen it yet but I plan to
And it hasn't been my #1 issue. It's been #2 on my list for a number of years though.

4. Global warming is intertwined with all of the big issues I care about...
Why haven't we dealt with global as of yet?
1. Broken democracy in which big $$$ determines who has the 'winningest' campaign and who can best disenfranchise voters and control voting machines.
2. Broken media - controlled by big $$$ it will NOT serve the needs of the 4th estate.

What about the occupation of Iraq - controlling oil pumped to keep gas prices high, killing innocent Iraqis and US troops to control the resources that is destroying the planet.

My two big issues:
(1) Elections - because if they aren't free & fair we don't live in a democracy.
(2) Occupation & militarism - materialism & power of the super-wealthy keep the motivation to build and use bigger weapons alive and killing.

So... where does that leave global warming? Perhaps it will become the problem we realize we MUST work will all people's on the earth to solve and, in so doing, we solve the other issues.

I tend to think of our current situation as a Gordian knot - untangle a little here, then a little there, then a little there... The problems are all interconnected.

7. I'd never heard of a Gordian knot before. Thanks!
What does this remind you of? It reminds me of current events.

"Alexander G. resting after the discovery of the knotted cube"

This picture struck me...

"Tangle"
(based on: Ashes by Edvard Munch )
The particularly nasty knot they recklessly decided to play with has a bad reputation.

All the above pictures were found at "Knots in Art" by Piotr Pieranski

6. I saw it today, and it is NOW my #1 issue.
Healthcare is still important, but it is clear to me now that more people will suffer because of our shoddy care of the Earth.

I think it was the scene where he uses the lift to reach the top of the CO2 emissions/temperature chart that did it for me. This shit is serious and urgent. We WILL see more drastic climate change in our lifetimes - people will suffer tremendously, and we have the tools to reverse this.

What the oil industry is doing to the environment is worse than their idiotic wars. If we make THEM obsolete, the world will be a much, much better place (and still a place).

9. High Electric Bills, High Gas Bills, etc. How can we afford not to!
For the every day joe, his ideas save money. Cuts home electricity, etc. Better gas useage in cars, samething. With all our money going to health care, how can we afford our electricity and gas.

Some people only think when their pocket book is hit. The way Gore explained things, I think it will make people set up and take notice. This is something that CAN be fixed. Before, the message was that nothing could be done..so why even try.

11. It's perhaps #1 in severity for me, but not in terms of urgency...
Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 11:12 PM by calipendence
I do see it as one of the biggest problems facing the human race, as it HAS to be solved at some point.

However, I do see the following issues as being more pressing, because, without solving them first, global warming simply WON'T get solved by those in power now!

In order of urgency:
1) Election fraud - making sure our elections are clean this November so the American people can be given a voice for change and not have it warped by this drive towards dictatorship.
2) Investigations and subsequent impeachments where needed - We need to rid this country of the cancer that plagues it now in our government. First priority is getting rid of the criminals and DON'T REISSUE them pardons like they've been getting in the past. Perhaps even send some of the most egregious criminals to the Hague for trial.
3) End the Iraq Occupation - Need to get this corrected so that we can get back towards restoring the faith of other countries in their ability to cooperate with us for the future, and also to stop this headlong move into horrendous debt.
4) Clean Elections - Simply MUST take corporate America out of controlling our government. There is NO way that Global Warming is solved with the current campaign financing system in place. Clean Elections will also get us started in cleaning up many other issues that are pressing now that are a problem because the corporations have bought out our politicians. This will be a chance for those that aren't criminals but have been living off the institutionalized bribery to either put up or shut up when it comes to representing people instead of corporate donors. If they can't do so, they are going to get pushed out in the midterm elections in 2010.
5) Global Warming/Energy Policy - Needs to get fixed shortly after solving these others, as there isn't a lot of breathing room for us having time to fix it without major problems down the road.
6) CORRECTIVE tax policies to restore the 90+% top marginal bracket for a period of time and restoring the estate tax, AMT tax WITH proper indexing, etc. to get people that have been scamming the system since 1980 to NOW pay their fair share to correct our country's debt problems and restore a more healthy balance of wealth so that it isn't at pre-depression levels any more.
7) Fixing other programs that have been heavily damaged or that have been broken over the years of Rethuglican rule. Laws regarding the press and media ownership, universal health care/medicare, social security, corporate charters.
8) Review the supreme court and other court justices when Dems have control to see if impeachable offenses were committed and "correct" those that have contributed to the current problems in a criminal fashion (coverups of State Secrets crap, etc.).
9) Go after Al Queda and kick it's butt!
