Hate sells
So explain to me why America is a great country, again, please. And how I am surrounded by good people. Explain to me how Ann Coulter's book is number 1 on the nonfiction list this week. That means my fellow Americans love hate.

This is what I have to see in my friday escape- my Entertainment Weekly magazine that comes in the mail. I need to escape reality. It reviews all poplular culture.Sometimes, it even recommends books I highly enjoy reading. Is this the country I know? Or is it the country of 1950 with the hate all full on display, with none of the codewords and niceties. And I think of some of the dreck of modern culture-the Paris Hilton crap, the shows on MTV, all that rot and it's mindless and they don't have the best morals and I get why their could be a backlash against that.
But this women's BOOK-is number 1. Books are supposed to be about real ideas. Not just about hate. The other stuff might be stupidity extreme-from Paris Hilton to the Bachelor-to sexist videos but it's not absolute pure hate.

This is the legacy of the Republican party of 2006-hate.

1. Hate is a result of fear...
...it's fear that's selling.

Not disagreeing with you, just clarifying (as I see it).

5. No
I don't think it's fear. I think it's a reaction... I see a lot of unfair stuff here, unfair on both sides probably--but people ARE gonna react to that.

I see Bush being blamed for some of the most UNLIKELY things--everything--which is a lot of crying wolf. It takes away from the stuff he really SHOULD be accountable for. In fact, I'd say many on our side are absolutely hysterical to blame him for anything and everything possible--whether it makes sense or not.

I think Ann's book is a reaction to that.

2. I heard this!
Not sure it's true but it made me feel better. I heard that most of her books were bought in large numbers by right wing groups, just to make her numbers look good.

I like to think that that's true, that a small number of people are buying large numbers of this book. And most real americans are staying far away from this hate, i can only hope.

3. ..
 Nothing is sacred anymore, they have ruined pretty much everything. Our hopes, our dreams, possibly our future, certainly the futures of our children/grandchildren/great grandchildren.

The good news is, ultimately, imvho, hate only hurts the hater. Not much of a comfort but I try.
