5. Latina from New Mexico here.

At least my father's half of me is Latina. My mother was from Nebraska, and my father brought her to Northern New Mexico right after WWII. I've been researching my Hispanic ancestors who lived here in New Mexico, and I am always amazed at what a strong and resilient group of folks they were. Hispanic in New Mexico means a mix of various Native American groups, Mestizo, Afro-Hispano, Spanish, and of course a sprinkling of Portuguese, a drop of Greek and more Sephardic Jews that most people realize or yes, and we all share that guy who came from Belgium in 1640 or around there. It also means you eat posole on New Year's Eve for good luck and Chili on everything all the time. ;-) I love my Hispanic heritage and I pass it on to future generations when I teach New Mexico History.
