Do you have a Senator on this list?
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 08:37 PM by Eric J in MN
These are the people who will decide if the full Senate votes on NET NEUTRALITY.

"Net Neutrality" means maintaning freedom by stopping companies such as AT&T from discriminating between websites and making some websites run more slowly.

Christy Hardin Smith writes:

It’s time to hit the phones, everyone. I am told that the Senate Commerce Committee will be doing bill mark-up today, and that the net neutrality vote will be pushed off until probably Tuesday.

And that we are one vote short at the moment for killing the Stevens bill in the Committee. Yep, that’s right: one vote. So here are the Senators on the bubble:

John McCain (AZ): (202) 224-2235; Fax: (202) 228-2862

Trent Lott (MS): (202) 224-6253; Fax: (202) 224-2262

Kay Bailey Hutchison (TX): 202-224-5922; 202-224-0776 (FAX)

Olympia J. Snowe (ME): (202) 224-5344; FAX (202) 224-1946

Gordon H. Smith (OR): 202.224.3753; Fax: 202.228.3997

George Allen (VA): (202) 224-4024; Fax: (202) 224-5432

Bill Nelson (FL): 202-224-5274; Fax: 202-228-2183

Maria Cantwell (WA): 202-224-3441; 202-228-0514 - FAX

Frank R. Lautenberg (NJ): (202) 224-3224; Fax: (202) 228-4054

E. Benjamin Nelson (NE): Tel: (202) 224-6551; Fax: (202) 228-0012

Mark Pryor (AR): (202) 224-2353; Fax: (202) 228-0908

Please contact all of them and let them know how you feel about net neutrality. Please, if you are a resident of their state, make it a point to call or fax today, and every day, until the vote.

We want the Senate to pass S. 2917, the "Internet Freedom Preservation Act."

2. Olympia Snowe is a sponsor of
the "Internet Freedom Preservation Act" S 2917.

I'm glad she's on the committee.

The other committee members don't necessarily fill me with optimism.

4. Christy Hardin Smith, whom I quote above,
says we're only one vote away.

I'm not sure how she determined that, but people should call Senators tomorrow and Monday and fax etc., because we're running out of time. At least know you tried.

9. Thank you. Once again, the bill we want the Senate to pass is
S. 2917, the "Internet Freedom Preservation Act."

It bans ISPs (companies like AT&T) from deciding for us which websites we visit will run quickly and which will run slowly.

7. Like I said last week...
if they start messing around with the current internet we will create Indienet as a free speech alternative. We went into this whole discussion, and it is actually quite practical. Just string together a bunch of WiFi nodes and you have another internet. We'd have to figure out a way to go global, but I think that could be worked out somehow.

11. I've contacted Allen. He's running in '06 against a strong Democratic
challenger. If he votes against Net Neutrality, he is screwed. Thelma Drake voted against it in the House and it will come back to haunt her. Her letter to me explaining why was a bunch of lies as if I were dumb head that was writing her at the behest of some group and I didn't know of what I was talking. Such a dumb ass!

Leave a message that the Seantor should support S. 2917, the "Internet Freedom Preservation Act."

Stop website discrimination by ISPs like AT&T. (They've announced plans to discriminate, let's stop that from happening.)

21. Please phone their offices today,
and tell a staffer that you'd like to talk to someone about a communications bill.

Then leave a message that the Senator should vote for S. 2917, the "Internet Freedom Preservation Act."

ISPs shouldn't be allowed to discriminate against websites and choose which load quickly and which load slowly.

25. I called Hutchison's office
I told the woman on the phone that I was a Texan and I support net neutrality. She said she would relay my sentiment to the Senator. I went on to explain that the Internet belongs to the people and that private enterprise could not be trusted with our Internet. Again, she said she would relay my sentiments to the Senator. I get the feeling it was a case of inoneearandouttheother but, what the hell. I gave it a shot.

36. Update from mcjoan of "The Daily Kos"
mcjoan writes:

Net Neutrality Update Hotlist
by mcjoan
Mon Jun 26, 2006 at 02:16:21 PM PDT

Just a quick reminder that mark-up of the telecommunications legislation continues tomorrow in the Senate Commerce Committee.

The Snowe/Dorgan amendment (S. 2917) will probably be taken up either tomorrow afternoon or early Wednesday. This amendment would preserve net neutrality by ensuring that

all content, applications and services are treated equally and fairly on the Internet by prohibiting broadband network operators from blocking, degrading, or prioritizing service on their networks.

The Senators who have committed to supporting S. 2917 are Snowe, Dorgan, Kerry, Boxer, Inouye, and Cantwell. The remainder of Democratic Senators on the Committee are likely votes, and the GOP Senators unknown. The most likely GOP supporters are McCain, Allen, Smith, and Hutchison.

Please call or fax these Senators (those supporting us to say "thanks") and ask them to support the Snowe/Dorgan amendment to preserve net neutrality. Contact information for the entire Commerce Committee below the fold.

39. It bans discrimination against websites.
Edited on Mon Jun-26-06 08:17 PM by Eric J in MN
AT&T would like to tell Google: pay us, and your website will run faster, or refuse to pay us and your website will run slower.

AT&T wants to make money by giving priority to certain websites for people who connect to surf the internet through AT&T.

The problem is that putting some websites on the front of the line means putting other websites on the end of the line.

This will effect "Democractic Underground."

If Skinner refuses to pay AT&T, then DU will run more slowly than it would otherwise for AT&T customers, because AT&T will treat our visits to DU as low-priority traffic.

If Skinner agrees to pay AT&T, DU will cotinue to run quickly, but it will get expensive as other ISPs also expect to get paid.

If this bill passes, then AT&T won't ask DU or Google for money in this regard.
