This week’s designated Republican who gets to scream and froth on Fox News and anywhere else where half-wits cluster as he shrieks, “Iraq really, really has WMDs, and here they are, see we told you, see, see, thank Jesus for Bush, yay, here they are, looky, looky” is none other than the nut-job Senator who insists his living children touch and fondle his dead one, Rick Santorum. Can we get a round of applause? Was it just yesterday that Santorum and his faithful companion, the mouth-breathing Representative from Michigan Peter Hoekstra were dashing from TV studio to TV studio with the news: “WE FOUND THEM!” And then late yesterday word began circulating (from the Pentagon, fer chrissakes) that Santorum once again had a loose ball-bearing rattling around inside his skull and should be ignored. These guys never quit. They are constantly revivifying the vacant claims that we have arrested or captured or killed the “20th hi-jacker” yet again; that we have at last found the WMDs; that it really is the face of Jesus formed on a cruller found in the back of the pastry case at a Dunlin Donuts shop in Chicago; that George W. Bush is a great leader.
It never stops. Back in the 30s Hitler’s posse referred to this as the Big Lie Technique: State an enormous lie over and over again (“The Jews eat Christian babies!”) and eventually the proles believe it to be true, accept it as, well, gospel. The BLT is the foundation, the basis, the driving force of the Republican Party. Every statement that comes from Republican Party HQ is a lie. Every statement that comes from Bush’s addled brain is a lie. Every claim made by Cheney, Rumsfeld, or Rice is a lie. You almost have to feel pity for Santorum. He didn’t even make it through one 24-hour news cycle with his hyperactive bouncing around Washington shouting “Wolf! Wolf!” before he was beaten into silence by the DOD. I said you almost have to feel pity. Santorum is not human (things that play with and sleep with dead babies are not human) and therefore does not deserve nor warrant a human emotion like pity. But it was interesting to watch. Like the video of, oh, say, a square-dancing couple missing a critical do-si-do and falling down is interesting to watch.
