Republicans no longer even " try " to hide their racism
If the suppression of black voters in 00 & 04 , along with Katrina, and stalling the voting rights extension weren't enough ( although there's plenty more examples )this modern version of the KKK/White Citizens Council has found mores reason to justify 90%+ of the community voting against them and Bush approval at less than 1%.
Washington D.C. is overwhelmingly black and poor. Public transportation is key to a very large portion of the population and their well being.

Conservatives target D.C. Metro funding

Next stop on the conservative crusade to curb federal
spending: Washington’s own Metrorail system.
A pair of prominent House conservatives sent House Speaker Dennis
Hastert (R-Ill.) and Majority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) a letter
Thursday asking the two leaders to postpone a scheduled vote next week on the
National Capital Transportation Amendments Act until appropriators find
offsets to balance funding for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit
Authority (WMATA).

Republican Study Committee (RSC) Chairman Mike Pence (R-Ind.)
and Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), the RSC budget director, wrote the
GOP leaders to oppose federal funding for select Metrorail upgrades,
which includes 340 new rail cars, 275 new buses, two new underground
pedestrian walkways, each linking a different pair of downtown stations, and
a number of other construction projects.

“Given the dire fiscal straits that our nation currently
faces, we believe that this bill should not be scheduled for floor
consideration without an acceptable and real offset, preferably in the area
of mass transit,” Hensarling and Pence wrote.

1. Do remember that the Republican party
was (and still is, IMHO) the white-flight party of the south (and everywhere else too). Most southern white democrats didn't like that the national democrats were supporting civil rights (and more blacks were becoming democrats) legislation and decided to join the republicans.

4. Although I am pissed about not funding Metrorail.....
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 08:19 PM by Kaylee
or should I say the lack of funds for Metro. I don't think congress is totally at fault. When will Maryland and Virginia step up to the bat and give WMATA a full and dedicated funding allotment? This game of begging for money from everyone each and every year makes no sense - especially since most of the riders are from the 'burbs anyway.

As I mentioned, most of the people who ride the Metro are from the middle class suburbs (me included) and are arguably not poor. Everyone of every color and ethnicity rides Metro, including white. Now, Metrobus, which Metro is finally paying attention to under the new GM, is a different story.
