Anyone else See CBS News Last Nite? They are really starting
to push Katie as a seasoned, hard, fair reporter. Gag me with a spoon.

First I heard it from Bob Schieffer at the end of his newscast - with picture of Katie dressed in black conservative suit and whole new look. I'm sorry. Even in black and with sensible shoes she still just looks "perky."

Then I saw an interview with Mike Wallace stating that Katie was a seasoned, tough, fair reporter. He thinks she will be great!

Know what I think? I think they are pretty worried. She doesn't even start until September.

And the other News shows have been really blasting CBS for the way they treated Dan Rather - best, hardest working reporter of all time.

4. I really think she will bomb
There were a lot of other females who could have done it better, without the "perky" element.

11. Well, I don't know
I might reconsider the "bomb" statement. Really, really bad news...we used to get comfort from Walter Cronkite, the old grandfather image. Maybe hearing awful things from perky Katie would be like hearing it from your kid sister or something.

it will be interesting!

8. Speaking of Katie, has she gotten back to us about her assertion...
...that Democrats also took money from Abramoff?

Katie: Hey, wait a second. Democrats took-Democrats took money from Abramoff too, Mr. Dean.

Howard: That is absolutely false. That did not happen. Not one dime of money from Jack Abramoff went to any Democrat at any time.

Katie: According to the CRP, Abramoff and his associates gave 3 million dollars to republicans and 1.5 million to democrats...

Howard: Not-one-dime.

Katie: We'll obviously have to look into that and clarify that to our viewers at a later date...

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2006/01/26.html

Well, Katie? Did you "obviously" look into this and is it that later date yet? It's been six months now...

9. Why is everyone so against Katie.
She is a female reporter that started at the bottom. She worked hard to push her way to the top. She has appealed to the public, shared her personal battles and her cause with colon cancer. She is raising her children by herself. She has covered topics, people, places and I don't think she fluffs it up. Of course, she was perky. She was on Morning T.V. Well, maybe we need a little Perk to get thru the evening too when we are tired, kids driving us nuts, and still have a To Do List that gets longer every day.

I personally grew up on GMA. Not that I care for Diane Sawyer either... My personal favorite was Joan Lundon.

Anyway... here is a woman at the later part of her life... She is not Barbara Walters or Diane Sawyer. She's a mom with a brighter outlook on life. Why must every newscaster be glum and chum. When she comes on in the fall... I will do something unprecidented, I will change networks to support a fellow woman who should not be judged by a smile, or crow feets... but of her accomplishments and her continuing her presence as a role model for young women every where...

See AndyTieDye's post #7 and my post here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=5503815

She has gone out of her way the last few years to prop up W and his cabal.

I thought journalists were supposed to be impartial.

14. That's easy - she's a Republican media whore
She plays footsie with the Bush administration and its apostles, Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly.

Katie is not a serious journalist. Never has been, never will be. Her butt is not worthy to rest in Dan Rather's old chair.

30. I don't doubt your statement, particularly after her meet-up with H. Dean..
But this site claims she "liberal."

But Katie Couric has shown America another side as well, a left side of bias in the slant of her interviews and her discussions of social and political topics. Today is a production of NBC News, and the left spin Couric relentlessly and sometimes hatefully imparts to her work is as serious a matter as if it aired on the NBC Nightly News, where Couric has occasionally appeared as a substitute anchor.

With even the left-liberal New York Times taking a critical look at Katie Couric, it's time America learned more about why the distorting light shone on so many topics by NBC's morning star appears to be red-shifted to the left side of the political-ideological spectrum.

http://www.discoverthenetwork.org/individualProfile.asp?indid=633

Might be a right-wing site hoping to persuade Americans that her reporting with be "liberal" so when she asserts to Howard Dean that "Democrats took money from Abramoff," Americans will think that's what "the left" believes...

21. I think it was the "Peter Pan" clip on the Today Show
That's what killed it for me. Hard to take her seriously when she was flying around in a Peter Pan outfit. Or dancing with Antonio Banderas.

Murrow, Cronkite, and Rather wouldn't have done that.

10. Everyone at CBS saying "...seasoned, tough, fair reporter..." ?
"Katie Couric is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I’ve ever met in my life.”
Maybe Rather started having flashbacks to the brainwashing and became a threat.

12. They really shot themselves in the foot...
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 12:58 PM by hlthe2b
Trying to appeal to a "younger audience"--that doesn't watch much news at all, much less network newscasts, they bring on Couric and clean house. In the process, they piss off all the older and boomer viewers who have been their bread and butter audience all these years. Then they go and dump Rather in such an unseemly way, that must hit home for so many above the age of 35, who, themselves are starting to worry about ageism in the workplace.

I have no intentions of watching... My options on NBC and ABC aren't good either, but, in defense of Rather (and a rather intense disdain for Couric), CBS has lost me.

15. I think they have lost most people.
People don't have to watch these anchors - they can just flip over to cable news.

I think most young people just get their news off the internet.

28. I think Howard Stern actually accurately predicted what will happen
Katie's first three to six months will be successful. There will be enough of a curiosity factor to spike the ratings, probably pretty dramatically. And after six months, people will go back to their old viewing habits of not watching the evening news or switch back to NBC or ABC. And Katie will end up in third place. And then CBS will try to dump her.

The network evening news is pretty much dead at this point regardless of who they hire.

24. I think it will be impossible for her to separate from her image -
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 03:00 PM by sparosnare
Doesn't matter what she wears, how she's promoted - she will always be seen as the host of a morning program, an entertainer, not a reporter. Of course CBS must try to sell her, they've invested a lot and for them, it has to work. I'm afraid they've made a mistake though.

I have no feelings for Katie Couric one way or the other, but she isn't going to make me want to watch The CBS Evening News.
