39. What will really smart...
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 02:08 AM by skids
...is if the particular weapons in question are verifiably documented to have been stored at one of the U.N. lockups and the U.N. simply had not pressed for their destruction because they were too defunct to be a serious concern.

I'm half tempted to go dig up the news articles about how the bungled post-invasion "plan" ended up putting all those high explosives, and probably some chem weapons, into terrorist hands or onto the black market. Oh and lest I forget to metion, allowed the Iraqi intelligence HQ building to be looted and burned -- though I guess some of those valuable intel documents have been bought back from the looters since. Who knows what was permanently lost or sold to other countries' intel agencies, though...

31. Defense Department Disavows Santorum’s WMD Claims
This is backfiring on the Repukes already. These were all abandoned & degraded munitions that were already known to have existed. Here's a good smackdown:

Today, Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) and Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) held a press conference and announced “we have found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.” Santorum and Hoekstra are hyping a document that describes degraded, pre-1991 munitions that were already acknowledged by the White House’s Iraq Survey Group and dismissed.

Fox News’ Jim Angle contacted the Defense Department who quickly disavowed Santorum and Hoekstra’s claims. A Defense Department official told Angle flatly that the munitions hyped by Santorum and Hoekstra are “not the WMD’s for which this country went to war.”

http://thinkprogress.org/2006/06/21/dod-disavows-santorum/

I can remember reading reports from over a year ago about two projectiles that had been used by insurgents to construct IEDs. One contained mustard gas and the other had sarin. It is highly unlikely that the insurgents believed these artillery rounds to be anything but conventional munitions. No one was injured by the chemical agents because components were not mixed properly prior to detonation, and also because their effectiveness had degraded due to the time that had elapsed since they were manufactured in the 1980s.

37. The Sarin is past it's shelf life
Sarin gas has a shelf life of a few weeks to a few months tops. If, and that's a big if, there is Sarin in those war heads it's past it's shelf life and is as harmful as sand.

....the arrests of those Marines and one Navy corpsman for murder of the Iraqi native in Hamdaniya.

Nothing at all.... pure coincidence.
