6. The NSA is hereby free ...
... to listen to my international phone calls (I'm in Canada, my family is States-side), and to read my email, as well as my postings here on DU as well as elsewhere, and the anti-Bush articles I've written that have been picked up by literally hundreds of Dem websites.

But be aware, NSA, of the following:

(a) You are BREAKING THE LAW
(b) If you read my emails, you're likely to DIE OF BOREDOM
(c) Everything I've ever written about the current Resident and
Administration constitutes MHO of the outrageous things
these Idiots have done to denigrate, weaken and destroy my beloved
country -- and if you pass ALL of it along to Bush and his
cronies, I WILL BE BEHOLDIN' to all of you!

End. Of. Discussion.

7. It would be zetta bytes
One large company can store terabytes of email. The scale of storage to do this would be massive.

And who the hell would want to sift through the inanity that most internet posts are?

10. Software does the reading.
They probably use sophisticated statistical theory to sort out messages of interest. Kind of like a spam filter but a whole lot bigger and better. And probably it isn't only single email messages or web postings that are analyzed, I would bet they also look at patterns of traffic. E.g., a lot of messages on a certain topic coming/going to certain places. Messages that individually are innocuous but together might point to something ominous.

I don't want to sound unconcerned about the recent revelations about NSA spying on domestic communications (I'm plenty concerned and outraged), but the NSA is there for a legitimate reason - to protect us from real enemies. I recall that two messages were intercepted on September 10, 2001 that pointed to a terrorist attack the next day, but these weren't translated until September 12.

If you don't want want your email read by unintended parties, you can encrypt it. But be careful; mistakes such as using the same key twice can allow the NSA to crack your message. And goodness knows, the usual commercial encryption software may well have convenient little back doors installed for the use of the NSA or other agencies. So your business competitors can't read your mail, but if need be, the government can.

11. People at the NSA are playing with stock tips and commodities
futures or some such stuff. They obviously have no freaking clue that anyone is about to attack anything. They have consistantly missed the largest moves in politics in the last 10-15 years. So they must be doing something else.

They have massive computing power. They are not supervised in any real way. And they have lots of time on their hands. What to do? Get rich. They could care less about PETA arguements about whether to protest a feed lot or a turkey ranch next week.

Plus they have several university dorms wired for video. Freshman dorms only.

13. The are spying on all the democratic Senators and Representatives
plus anyone who is identified as in opposition to bushie.

That kept (keeps) them too busy to shift through all the crap from the real bad guys.

That's my guess anyway.

maybe we should start sending disinformation towards the NSA.
