Half of U.S. illegal aliens enter legally
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=1a3a35d162468805

More than 5 million illegal immigrants in the United States, entered the country legally but overstayed their visas, the Pew Hispanic Center reports.

That's nearly half of the estimated total of 12 million illegal immigrants now in the country, The Washington Times said.

Although Congress authorized several initiatives to track foreign visitors following the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and then again after the Sept.11, 2001, attacks, the U.S. government currently has no means of determining whether all the foreign nationals admitted for temporary stays actually leave the country, said the non-partisan, non-profit research group.

The government has about 3,000 agents nationwide to enforce immigration laws in the nation's interior, the Times said.

4. Only problem with that is...
employers would become *really* reluctant to hire ANY Latino people, because what if their papers are faked?

How about requiring employers to file proof of citizenship for every employee? And if the papers are faked, they shouldn't be held responsible.

When I started working in the 80's, you had to jump through lots of hoops to prove citizenship. I guess that whole thing just slowly dissolved.

2. No money, no agents, no way to track folks with expired visas
It's oversimplified, but it gets the point across.

You cannot have a functioning immigration policy if you are not able to police your own borders.
