Everyone in politics knows the old rule that if you find yourself in a hole, the first thing you should do is stop digging. But the Republicans say “No, No, No, Not so! The hole we dug in Baghdad is not yet deep enough or wide enough. We must keep digging!”
They will not tell us how deep we must dig this hole, or how wide, or how long it will take to finish the hole, or how much the hole will cost us -- and our children -- and our grandchildren. They only tell us that we must not stop digging.
The Republicans can no longer use the excuse that we must dig to uncover the fictional WMD’s. They can no longer use the excuse that we must dig to find Saddam’s fictional links to Al Qaeda. They can no longer use the excuse that we must dig to revenge Saddam’s fictional role in the September 11, 2001 attacks. Their only explanation is that not digging is worse than continuing to dig.
The hole is already big enough to hold the graves of 2500 Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis. But that is not yet big enough.
And that is my rant.
