CNN Report: Insurgents captured soldiers
Report: Insurgents captured soldiers

Witness tells NY Times he saw two U.S. soldiers being led away

Saturday, June 17, 2006; Posted: 8:59 p.m. EDT (00:59 GMT)

Maj. Gen. William Caldwell says a search will continue until the soldiers are found.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqi witnesses say they saw two U.S. soldiers who survived an attack at a checkpoint near Baghdad being led away by masked insurgents to a pair of cars, The New York Times is reporting in its Sunday edition.

"There are intelligence indicators they may have been captured alive rather than killed," a senior military official told CNN on Saturday night.

One U.S. soldier was killed in the attack, and a massive search was under way Saturday for the two who are unaccounted for.

1. And this is exactly why the Geneva Convention is so DAMN important!
Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 09:20 PM by Divernan
Bush's critics have said from the beginning, that every time the US disregarded the Geneva Convention and tortured or enabled the torture and/or mistreatment of U.S. prisoners, it was guaranteeing that any US soldiers captured would receive the same horrifying treatment.

5. That's right.
Now all we can do is pray for them and their families, and brace ourselves for some increasing ugly stories about this in the near future. :(

2. I fear that an ugly video may follow.
If it is true that these poor guys were captured by insurgents, it is very bad. I only hope that responsiblity for this will be placed on the right people, like the ones who started this awful war.

7. A blunt word to lurkers.
Murtha, Kerry and Max Cleland survived only to be savaged alive by Chicken Hawks. Maybe these captured soldiers will die and get lucky and used as martyrs for Rove's future propaganda. Apparently this is a much grander fate than becoming a successful veteran turned Dem politician.

8. If true, then it's a death sentence
And if those insurgents are Al Qaeda (rather than Iraqi) then there will likely be a very greusome execution video as they try to show that they are still relevant after Zarqawi.

Bad stuff.

9. Question..
do our soldiers have some sort of GPS tracking device on them as standard issue? I had assumed each troop was accounted for on some master theater wide computer program or was that some futuristic TV program from the military channel?

10. This is truly a crummy story
They do not describe anthing about the check point, how many U.S. troops there, and Iraqi police/military, and how can they be dragged off, did they not have their weapons? This story sounds as bizarre as the one about the captured female journalist (Italian?) that was released and was being driven to airport and all hell broke lose at a check point. Apparently no Embassy people knew of the situation. We thought Viet Nam was mismanaged, sheesh. Sounds like more media bs via the Generals.

12. Funny why this never happened
to soldiers when Zachwari was in charge isn't it? Almost like he was working for us.

16. Yes it did, just not recently.
The idea that Zachwari was working for us is beyond ludicrous.

17. An inquiry must be demanded on how this could happen in the first place.
Top brass heads gotta roll for leaving our troops exposed in "The Triangle of Death".
