No time table Bush keeps saying. Translation: We will be in the middle east FOREVER.

1. What a surprise!
We're addicted to oil. There's a lot of oil in the Middle East. Iraq is in the Middle East. Iraq has a lot of oil. We are in Iraq.

2. It's oil, but it's more than oil, too.
Iraq is now a key position for strategic basing of US air assets. that not only meets the Isreali interests of the Neocons but also addresses concerns of traditional cold warriors (including Condi) by advancing the southern arm of encirclement of Russia.

Although we have moved units into central Asian republics of the former USSR maintenance of those positions is failing. So Iraqi bases are needed more than ever.

4. Oil Oil (for the rich) Toil and Trouble (for the Mideast and our troops)
Colonialism is over for most of Europe. Their colonies have reverted to local control.* America is now trying to use their abandoned model in the Mid-east. The UAE, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are pretty much satellite states now. We have fairly well annexed Iraq, and Syria and Iran cannot be too far behind. The oil barons want to move in, take what wealth of natural resources they have in those countries, and then abandon it.

*At least in the sense of formal control. I am aware that colonialism, in the form of private "first" world industry, is still alive and well in the "developing" (read "open to corporate rape") world
