Oops, lost my identity . . .
Well, I got my letter from the Veteran’s Administration telling me that my personal information was stolen when the home of a VA employee was burgled May 3. It took the VA three weeks to admit that the data of 26.5 million of my brothers and sisters in arms was missing. It took an additional three weeks to set up a tip line for information leading to the return of the laptop and disk drive. Why did it take so long and why did the employee take the laptop home in the first place? I think it’s probably because the Bush Administration is starving the VA for operating funds so employees are taking work home over the weekend. But I digress . . .

The letter reassures me that the VA is taking all possible steps to protect my stolen information. Says the FBI and Inspector General are investigation the poor ba$tard who lost the laptop. They say I don't need to do anything. I found it interesting that they didn't suggest I put a freeze on my credit information. It’s easy in Texas, just call the three reporting agencies, identify yourself and tell them to freeze your account. That means that they will not release your credit info to anyone for any reason unless they contact you first. Easy peasy. I did it a year ago when someone bought a cell phone in my name.

Then I found this: http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/credit/2006-06-14-credit-freeze-usat_x.htm
============================
Bill would limit consumers' credit rights

“Congress is considering pre-empting laws in 17 states that allow anyone to freeze their own credit and instead restricting the privilege to ID theft victims.

The proposed Financial Data Protection Act of 2006 (Don’t ‘cha just love the way they name bills?), expected to be voted on by the House as soon as next week, comes on the heels of the recent theft of sensitive data for 26 million veterans and active duty military personnel. If it becomes law, vets and military personnel who live in states that permit unrestricted credit freezes would lose that option.”
==========================
So, now that the VA has lost my name, date of birth, mother’s maiden name and social security number I will have to wait until someone actually steals my ID before I can take steps to prevent the theft of my ID. That’s like passing a law saying you can't install a dead bolt unless you've been robbed! WHAT ARE THEY THINKING!?! Oh, foolish me, the Republican Congress doesn't think they just sign off on the bills written by the Banking Lobby. The bill is H.R. 3997 and it comes up for vote next week. Overall it’s a pretty good bill until you get to Sec. 630, (i)(2)(ii) which says to request a freeze you must ,”(submit) an identity theft report to the consumer reporting agency,” which means your identity must have been stolen and a police or other report confirms it.

Find your Rep here: http://www.house.gov/

Find your senator here: http://www.senate.gov/

Ya’ might want to give ‘em a call and ask them to remove that language. The rest of the bill looks pretty good.

It's a waste of time, but I'll call him. Thanks for the heads up.

This should be on the greatest page for visibility. :kick:& R

4. Well, the reason is they had to collect 26.5M addresses from NSA
Um, I mean the IRS.

Personally, when my tin-foil hat slipped I realized it was a "wet lab" for the gobmint. . .

11. I thought mine was mailed via franking priviledges.
The USPO charged the VA postage? 2nd class for junk mail I hope.

12. Nope, first class presorted with a permit number. Permit number
is basically a billing number so the the VA gets billed for it. Franking privileges are for elected officials to send mail to their constituents.

7. I've had my card number stolen, and NEVER . . .
have had a police report filed. My credit card co. told me what to do to freeze the account. I didn't suffer any financial loss because of the credit policy on my card, so how can I file a police report?

10. Credit card theft is different from Identity theft. In fact, it would
probably be easier to file a report on the theft of a card than Identity. I don't even know who to file a report with. I suppose the filing would have to be with the reporting agencies which is sort of circular.

9. Most of the bill is pretty good. As far as I can tell it's just this
one provision that sucks.

13. It sounds like they have no backup -
What's up with that? Did a copy of the data end up in the wrong hands (big problem all by itself), or is it that the VA itself actually does not have the data any more?

Either way, retrieving the laptop will not take the data back from the wrong hands - it's trivial for the thieves to make another copy of the data before the laptop find its way back to the VA. Then the data would still be stolen, and the problem would not be solved. If otoh the VA does not have the data anymore, in other words, doesn't have a backup of it - that would at the very best be gross negligence.

15. I'm sure there are multiple copies on multiple hard drives, but
worst case scenario they could re-constuct it from paper. What a nightmare! Just ressurecting 26.5 million DD214s would take years.

Why they can't figure out who keeps stealing these computers is beyond me though.

16. I got the same letter Monday.
I’ll bet that whoever stole that machine wishes that they hadn’t. It was a simple burglary for the local PD to investigate, but now the Feds are involved.

Regards,

Mugu

20. I got the letter too
Do you think every veteran got it, or was there some way of determining likely victims?

That House bill concerns me too. Does that really mean we vets would have to wait until there is an actual theft before we can take steps to protect ourselves? I wonder if that provision was inserted as a result of what happened with those records. That would be outrageous, though it wouldn't surprise me at all that the banking corporatacracy was taking preemptive steps to avoid having to do it job and protect consumers. :grr:

22. Only 17 states allow the consumer to freeze his own account without
some verifiable reason. Texas is one. You'll have to check your own state. It's probably an oversight in language or just sloppy, but it would require you to submit an identity theft report to freeze the account.

I put a 90-day alert on my credit report with all three agencies. I will have to pay to extend that. Which pisses me off, but what can you do?

25. Send the bill to the VA with copies to your Rep & Senator.
Won't help, but might get some attention to the bill's language.
