President Bush’s “Oh, Shit” Moment of the Day
President Bush’s “Oh, Shit” Moment of the Day

Earlier today, we described an exchange at this morning’s press conference between President Bush and Peter Wallsten of the Los Angeles Times. President Bush joked about Wallsten’s wearing sunglasses while asking his question.

We called it the best exchange of the conference; but it was even better than we thought. A tipster points out:

For what it matters, during the Bush Rose Garden presser this a.m., Wallsten was wearing shades because he is legally blind — a fact that Bush apparently didn’t know, or forgot, about one of the reporters covering him for one of America’s major newspapers.

Way to go, Mr. President.

7. remember the stevie wonder wave?
From the Washington Post:

Here's a vignette we're dying to see on the ABC broadcast of Sunday's Ford's Theatre Presidential Gala: When Stevie Wonder sat down at the keyboard center stage, President Bush in the front row got very excited. He smiled and started waving at Wonder, who understandably did not respond. After a moment Bush realized his mistake and slowly dropped the errant hand back to his lap. "I know I shouldn't have," a witness told us yesterday, "but I started laughing."

There was an attempted Republican spin job after this that claimed it wasn't true, but then a half dozen other witnesses came forward and said that it was.

I saw the exchange and I thought perhaps the reporter had had eye surgery requiring him to wear the dark glasses, but still thought it was so rude of Bush to press the matter. Bush was basically saying that it was not a real sunny day out to wearing sunglasses. What a freaking jerk. Frat Boy Jerk.

Q All right, I'll keep it, then.

THE PRESIDENT: For the viewers, there's no sun. (Laughter.)

Q I guess it depends on your perspective. (Laughter.)

THE PRESIDENT: Touche' . (Laughter.)

91. Bush's humor attempts usually come at someone else's expense.
Every time I've heard him say something remotely funny, it was to make fun of someone else, or it would be something that would show total disrespect and disregard for the feelings of others.

He has no ability to empathize. No big surprise since I htink that was typical for the succubus that birthed him.

If he gets even a slightly warm feeling in his heart, he becomes overwhelmed and starts crying.

"Arrested development" might be a good label for him.

58. Didn't another DUer call it "South Park" Republicanism?
it's the snarky "hey, I'm just being funny" kind of mean-spirited shallow bullyboy racism, sexism, and soul-dead emptiness that Republicans think makes them less pathetic and, oh, please, oh, please...cool.
Republicans are not cool. Never have been. Never will be.
They're the amazingly uncool Rush Limbaugh with anal warts. Newt Gingrich with his clawing at the evasive limelight. Pudgy Karl Rove orchestrating payback against the enemies' list. And Ann Coulter and Matt Drudge with their sad personal lives and desperate public personas.
You can smell their striving. They stink of self loathing.
They'll never get over the humiliation of high school and will never stop trying.
Hey, Republicans, sorry about Prom. Sorry about Football. Sorry about whatever you didn't get that you wanted.
Now grow up and start behaving like human beings.

111. I recently rewatched The Madness of King George on DVD
It was made in 1994 and based on historical events, but amazingly relevant to "our" King George. One of the main themes of the film (and the stage play on which it was based) is that, while the King's mental health problems were caused by a physical ailment, porphyria, they were exacerbated by the protective bubble of monarchy. When nobody is ever willing to question you or challenge you, they have no choice but to buy into your delusions. Great film, if you haven't seen it, watch it, and if you have, watch it again.

Edited on Wed Jun-14-06 03:23 PM by Jersey Devil
That's what he was really saying. Despite the fact that he obviously knew the reporter and called on him by name, "Peter", the dumbass didn't remember he was blind, or didn't know, even though he covers Bush for one of the nations largest papers, the LA Times.

He has his little pet peeves. I've seen him absolutely steam up if someone addresses him as "Mr. Bush" or "Sir" rather than "Mr President."

Arrogant asshole.

70. People snark at me all the time for wearing sunglasses indoors,
but I have no choice! I've got extreme secular degeration in my left eye, and the light HURTS! I can't go anywhere without someone making a snarky comment, and I've grown tired of explaining myself to total strangers. Nowdays, I just play like I'm freaking out 'cause I can't see my husband - acting blinder than I am - now. Shuts 'em up, and embarrasses them.

73. Wallsten is much to generous to the jerk....
<snip>

At a press conference this morning, President Bush needled Los Angeles Times reporter Peter Wallsten after he stood up to ask a question wearing sunglasses. “Are you going to ask that question with shades on?” Bush said, telling Wallsten, “I’m interested in the shade look, seriously.”

But as Wonkette first noted, and which ThinkProgress subsquently confirmed, Wallsten is legally blind. Wallsten tells us he has a rare genetic disorder called Stargardt’s Disease. The disease is a form of macular degeneration that can be slowed “by wearing UV-protective sunglasses and avoiding exposure to bright light.”

Wallsten said Bush’s comments did not offend him at all. “I never advertise it to him. I’ve never told him.”

104. Bush is an embarrassment to America.
I watched the smug little chimp give his little speech, sitting on top of the world after his "victory lap" in the Green Zone. When he tries to be breezy and comments to people as he calls on them he always seems so bratty and arrogant I just want to shove my remote straight up his nose. Hard.

What an unpleasant jerk he is. Yuk.
