That's pretty sad if its true. I can't believe anyone would waste their money on that trash.

2. Someone in my apartment building
got an ad in the mail and posted it by the mailboxes. Something from Newsmax about getting a copy of Anthrax's new book for only $4.99. They're basically giving them away. I'll bet Newsmax bought a few thousand copies and can't wait to unload them.

13. Stacking the deck, that explains it. Sheesh.
The Dixie Chicks new CD was cut in price, but not to such an enormous extent!!!

I never believed in book burning, but well at $4.99 a shot, well...hmmm

12. What's the proof that it's entirely bulk sales?
Where's the proof that no one is buying her book outside the usual suspects? I'm not trying to start a fight here but when you say ignoring her is working and her book stays at #1, I have to admit I'm not convinced.

It was on either the PW or the NYT list I saw yesterday. That's what that icon means: significant bulk sales.

26. This isn't bulk sales.
Bulk purchases are not made from Amazon, this report is for their sales. The book is doing very well despite (or possibly due to) our disgust.

I am retired from the book industry.

51. ???
I didn't say it currently was?

I just said that bulk purchases are almost always made directly from the publisher, they aren't going to buy in the 1000's from a middleman. So the bulk sales will not be in NYT or Amazon or B&N lists.

The publisher will also later take bids on the "remainders" which is how bookstores get their Bargain Books.

Bulk sales. Like what Scientology used to do, what was done to Savage's books, etc. This is not consumer driven, it is RE-think tank driven. This is a fake number 1.

7. Brilliant marketing scheme....
stir up fake controversy, get the 24 hour news cycle media buzzing about you, generate lots of free publicity, push name recognition up 1000%. Voila, #1 bestseller!

I believe it worked for Dan Brown as well.

29. I's gather that Dan Brown's success was word of mouth in the beginning.
I hardly heard a peep about The Da-Vinci code until the movie was announced and then it was 24/7.
A year ago I picked it up because I had to find out why this book was on the best seller's list for so long. But honestly, before the film came out, I hardly heard anything about it.

39. I think they helped the movie more than they did the book.
The book has been in the top 10 for three years now. And like I said before, I just went out and bought it on a whim just to see if it was really that good (It wasn' t :P).
But I honestly had never seen a rush of promotion for the book until the movie was being filmed. Then it was everywhere. Which only proves: The Right can't read. :P

For not telling the "Truth" (as they see it) about book sales.

They're trying to pull some "fuzzy math" with the bulk sales. And as usual they think no one will notice their shell game.

I suppose on Amazon it was real. But I could see inflating the numbers overall with advance copies. In a couple of months, it would be interesting to see what ends up on the discount rack.

As for her actually being number 1, it's hard to believe considering Fox News ratings are going down. If people are getting sick of them, surely they'd be getting sick of Ann.

ranking system.

You standard operating procedure in the * admin. If you don't like the outcome of anything, like economic reports, what do they do?

They change the way that it is reported and ranked etc.

Given the disdain for brain-work that I've encountered first-hand among Republican supporters, does anyone think that these guys maybe don't actually read the books? Maybe they just buy them as a show of support. I mean, all Coulter ever does is reiterated what her fan base believes in anyway.

I got a hardcover, AUTOGRAPHED (not just "autograph stamped"; the ink bled through the page) copy of Rudy Giuliani's "Leadership" at a discount . . . 30 cents at a second-hand store.

The spine wasn't even crimped, cracked, or whatever the term is. Nobody bothered to read it. They just bought it so that it would look good on their shelf.

She gets on for the same reason Meet the Press has a ratio of Conservatives to Liberals of about 5 or more to 1. That's how the corporate masters want it. If Franken puts out a new book he might get on Letterman and the Daily Show but the Today Show, no way!
