Fred Phelps political affiliation
is he 'rethug or Democcrat? I"ve got a freeper-type saying he's a far-left Dem! That makes no sense to me.

2. In the 60s and early 70s he made his money
as a civil rights lawyer. The only reason he practiced was to make money. He says he's a registered Democrat. He uses that to smear Dems.

3. Phelps was a dem
he could still technically be registered as a dem. No doubt this freeper-type will bring up the fact that Phelps used to do quite a bit of fund raising for the dems and there are several pictures of him with Gore, taken many, many years ago, before Phelps went over to the dark AND crazy side of his "religion".

To my knowledge, there has been no support either from or to Phelps by anyone in the dem party since Gore stopped his affiliation with him many years ago.

4. I've read that he's a registered Dem.
But, that doesn't mean anything. Registration is probably from back in the '50s or '60s, when all the red states were Dem. Or Dixiecrat to be more precise.

Far left? Not even close.

Far out? About as deep-space freeper as you can get.

5. Appears so
The Democratic tent includes the Rev. Fred Phelps Sr., the state's best known anti-gay advocate. Phelps is a registered Democrat who ran unsuccessfully for the party's gubernatorial nomination in 1990, 1994 and 1998 and for the U.S. Senate in 1992.

Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church

I have a feeling he's one of them Dixie Dems.

7. He doesn't stand for Democratic principles
He's a religeous extremest bigot - right there with Falwell and Robertson. Bigotry is a Rethug principle.

10. Anyone can register w/ any political party that they choose to....
(or none in some states like NY). Registering as a Democrat no more makes you a real Democrat then going into a church makes you a "Christian".

11. Fred Phelps is/was a Democratic civil-rights activist
That was back in the 1950s, before that brain tumor caught up with him.

He's still a Democrat, but mainly out of force of habit and a probable desire to embarrass the party.
