I am bothered by the current lack of regard for tradition. Also our US press never covered this anywhere!

1. Hmm... what I learned that this was a reorganization.
The regiments that were are now battallions under the new Royal Regiment of Scotland. It doesn't mean that tradition won't live on - it's just as they say, change. And yes it can be painful.

Things do change. Even in the Airforce, squadrons get disbanded. 617 squadron, better known as "The Dambusters" itself got disbanded and re-grouped.

Mark.

2. I don't think they keep their distinctive uniforms. Of course
one could see this coming with the end of the separate regimental pipe bands. I imagine the Scots really dislike all this. I suppose it is some sort of dismal economy measure. Too bad about the 617! I didn't know that either.

5. Here's a link from the British Army:
http://www.army.mod.uk/infantry/regts/scots/organisation/index.htm

The re-organised links to the various battalions within the Royal Regiment of Scotland which have the former regiments pretty much preserved in order but now under one umbrella.

You can google for {name of regiment} disbanded - and get more information from various sources....

6. Pomp doesn't defend the country
Modern warfare and combat reality has transcended the value of tradition;
and it was, all too often, cannonfodder, for all the nobility of song.

If you miss that stuff, you can always come to the edinburgh tatoo, or
go watch a marching band. There's enough tartain tradition out there
in civilian life to more than plug the hole.

I'm all for tradition, and none of it being traditions of war.

8. We are thinking of visiting Edinburgh
but are too late to get tickets for the Tattoo, I think. We did go to the Trooping of the Colours in London though when both the Queen and the Queen Mother were there. I am an historian so I am interested in tradition of this sort.

9. If you go, can you look up some info for me?
My mother's family is from Keith, which is about 25 kilometers ESE of Elgin. I want to know more about this town's history, etc. and if you pass through there you might find something interesting not available on the 'Internets.' :)

10. I hope we will be able to go. If so we will check for you.
I am very interested in local history of any kind. Incidentally, I have been wathcing just now a special on NOLA musicians and how they are either coming back or hoping to do so soon. Encouraging!
