Wisconsin man, former SS officer, builds memorial to Hitler
I predict this memorial won't last long.

One man's memorial to Hitler
Despite potential controversy, a former SS officer set to open a memorial near Millard

By Donna Lenz Wright/The Week

"Hitler did nothing.

"When the war happened, he tried everything diplomatic--everything.

"The soldiers of the Third Reich never stole anything. I fought next to them. They were good men. Never times were they bad.

"Not one person was gassed to death in the Third Reich."

This is what Ted Junker of Millard believes.

1. I think we've found the new Whitehouse press officer!
"Never times were they bad."

Wise words indeed.

for calling an SS officer a "pig".

6. Eh, I agree with this guy that Hitler gave jobs and......
..therefore food and a certain standard of living to the German people...but that's about it.
Everything else he did was revolting and despicable.
Oh, and his 'Mein Kampf' was among the most boring and dry literature I ever read......

10. Hitler rebuilt the economy
with no knowlege, and indeed a disdain for, economics. Most of the turnaround in the German economy was due to militarisation. Without a war Germany would be broke, for real this time, in another couple of years.

Sound familiar?

21. "[R]evolting and despicable" are hardly up to the task of describing
the evil and demented atrocities committed by the Nazis.

7. I knew a former SS officer
who passed a number of years ago. If he were alive today, he'd kick this idiot's ass. BTW, the SS officer I knew spent all his time fighting the Russians.

11. Even bearing in mind
that there was a huge distinction between the mainly combat troops of the Waffen (literally "weapons") SS and the Totenkopft (literally "death's head") SS who guarded the concentration camps Junker could not fail to be unaware of the Einzatzgruppen.

These roving groups were responsible for approximately 1.5 million deaths of Jews and numerous other Untermenschen.

12. Let's consider Herr Junker's 1st amendment subterfuge.
I find it ironic that Ted Junker is a cheerleader for the 1st amendment. Does anyone else believe he's just a tad disingenuous?

First Hitler deprived the Jews of their civil rights. Then he deprived them of their jobs and capital. Then he deprived them of their right to exist.

Hitler, what a swell guy. And such an example of 1st amendment principles, too. :sarcasm: :grr:

18. Hmm indeed
Well this guy had some experience in Romania where he was persecuted before the war... he was a Nazi foot soldier, a cog in the machine if you will. Its unfortunate that he is basing all of his judgements from his own personal experience. He wasn't stationed at one of the camps.. not every SS unit, not every military unit is going to commit atrocities. He didnt see what was going on with the domestic side.. he was in the SS the whole time. By the time the guy gets out of it hes in an allied prison camp and the war is over... His conflict is probably a very personal one.. just say you or I were in the SS during WW2... the guilt would be tremendous, I hope. Seems he'd rather believe this...

13. There were dozens of WWII POW camps in Wisconsin
and over 20,000 Axis prisoners were interned here. (Google "Stalag Wisconsin").

Milwaukee was a major Bund center.

Neo-nazis continue to be a presence in Wisconsin, a planned rally by them was disrupted by anti-fascists at the beginning of this month.

What is so surprising about finding former SS or other Nazis with their Hitler shrines in this state?

They've also been in the OSS/CIA, on former presidents' staffs and NOW they're occupying the WH. Our benighted species' trajectory ain't looking too good.

20. It's illegal to spout that crap in Germany
They have laws against any kind of Nazi behavior--like...well, you know, building shrines to Adolf Hitler and things like that.

I figure this guy has the perfect right to build a shrine to Hitler, just as I have the perfect right to think he's a nut and not to go to it.

The interesting thing here is that there's a big market for a shrine to Hitler in the United States. There are lots of racist skinheads out there, and to them the Fuehrer was just a great guy. This is not the shrine they're looking for--these guys know the death chambers existed, they like the fact that they did, and they're NOT going to accept this recasting of Hitler as a liberal.
