She was an unknown quantity. Thus, there was a possibility a family war and plenty of headlines if she was true to herself and therefore plenty of books sold. In that context, it was a reasonable bet. No one figured she'd piss off intelligent people and do nothing to appeal to the bigots in the Republican base (thus, no mass purchases by Republican group that jack up the sales of others), leaving no one to buy it.
