The Greatest Place for Gays to live
In the world or in the United States. Does anyone have any suggestions.

I think I'm tired of the backward, homophobic assholes running this land. Is there any place any better?

5. Anywhere in MA, Provincetown is popular in the summer
and expensive, like most of CC...but anywhere past the elbow of the Cape is damn boring in the winter. It's a haul to get to the 'big city' of Hyannis, and when you've got a good storm going, you just want to stay home.

13. Well I'll I Can Tell You Is
that Arkansas doesn't seem to be too gay friendly (I'm not gay, but I don't think gay people are treated well here. We now have outlawed gay marriage in 2004)

There are probably places in the state that gayness is more acceptable.

Actually, Arkansas is a pretty intolerant state all the way around as far as that goes.

14. I'm in Tallahassee, Florida.
There's a pretty large gay community here, which is ironic considering the fundamentalist Christian stranglehold on the region. I wonder how aware of it JEB! is.

21. I'm Sure JEB Doesn't Really Give A Shit
except where it affects his political future

remember he comes from the BFEE, his family members masturbated in coffins at Yale while telling their sexual history to the Skull and Bones Society.

It would be hard to truly be judgmental about sex on a personal level when you've got real freaks in your immediate family.

Any rants JEB has about homosexuality are fabricated and calculated for greatest political benefit.

the town hosts two gay festival weekends every year. One gay travel guide mentioned that there were no gay bars there - then said there were no straight bars there either. . .everyone goes anywhere they like and no one seems to mind.

I live in Hot Springs and at one point we had one gay bar (Which is now a mexican bar, I think..) and two drag clubs. One of which, ironically enough, was originally a Baptist church...

I have a good friend that lives there. She was telling me she paid $12.00 for a sandwich! Expensive as hell is right! Only for the rich I'd say.

As for being gay and living there, maybe that is an ok place to live but you'd better be rich.

as long as you don't have a bridge phobia it's great! Great little shops, restaurants and bars, not to mention Sunset Pier where people gather to watch the sunset. It's like a mini-carnival.

Being gay is an asset in Key West. :-) When I lived there the mayor was gay. I wonder if they still have the Fantasy Festival?

It's very expensive, unfortunately, but what a lovely tropical paradise! Rent a scooter or bring a bike - you can pedal the whole island easily. . .walk Duval Street for people watching, hit an open-air bar, watch the performers in Mallory Square.

I love Key West!

12. Knoxville, TN
Believe it or not (of course, it helps that Victor Ashe was mayor here forever. LOL!)

Seriously, you'd have to live in Fountain City or old North Knoxville, but those two communities (I live in Fountain City) are very welcoming to gays and lesbians. I lived in a house about eight years ago where my neighbors on either side were lesbian couples. One couple even adopted the cutest little baby boy.

The only problem with Knoxville is, once you leave the city limits and head out into Knox County, you're likely to be lynched. It really is its own world. For example, there's a hill, called Black Oak Ridge, that separates Fountain City, within the city limits of Knoxville, from Halls, a community in the county.

You could literally watch the Kerry signs being replaced by Shrub signs as you traveled over the ridge and there were actually little "sign wars," wherein some Fountain Citian would post a huge Kerry sign - that would get knocked down or stolen and replaced with a huge Shrub sign which would then be (and I actually saw this) run THROUGH by a car and replaced with Kerry signs. It was very entertaining, actually.

They are a society who place much less significance on specific, rigid roles. It's just my observation over the years of listening to what Brits have to say about being gay.

I keep wanting to paint a picture of the ultimate final state of America, as according to the desires of the conservative phonies. I guess one word would sum it up- BORING.

edit- In case it's of any value, I would like to say that being hetero I am as incensed as you might be. It does affect me.

81. I hope so
I'm not gay, but I am likely to be living in London for the next three years, and I'm not overoptimistic about the prospect - I've never lived in a large city before.

The nicest place to live that I've come across is Cambridge (the original one here in the UK, although I imagine the American one is nice too). It's incredibly expensive, though. It's not the kind of place where whether you're straight or gay would make much difference, so I'd probably nominate it as my response to the OP.

for. Beyond acceptance and no hassling that you're gay of course. Urban? Rural? Warm climate? There are lots of places in the US where being gay is not a big deal. My state, Vermont, is definitely gay friendly, but it's still not the place for a lot of people.

He told me they call it the Fruit Loop.

He took me out to dinner at a restaurant there and gays were openly kissing. He looked to see if I was shocked, but I guess he does not know me well enough to know it did not matter to me.

It is pricey there, but very vibrant and exciting.

Oh, perhaps I should mention my best bud is gay...he is like my best friend in the world.

Check out the numbers, DC is really not all THAT gay-friendly, and VA is horrible when it comes to gay rights. I do believe they still have same-sex sodomy laws on the books, even if they are unenforceable.

27. San Diego CA
There is a very large gay population. I have seen men hold hands at Macy's out side of the 'gay area' and no one cared. The gay area is huge covering most of the city proper (Hillcrest, North Park, Mission Valley etc).

Its a little pricey, however for as conservative people think San Diego is it is VERY gay friendly. (The mayor lives in a gay area, the is a lesbian council member etc)

My wife and I just left Asheville last weekend after dropping our daughter off at camp in Black Mountain. I swear, every time we go, we look at each other and say, "Now, why is it that we aren't living here?"

There is an AMAZING vegan/vegetarian restaurant there called the Laughing Seed. Excellent. Not to mention other veg/vegan restaurants such as Max and Rosie's. The atmosphere is wonderful...great people who seem to be very progressive. It is like a little oasis in the South.

Can't wait to pick up my daughter from camp next weekend...

52. the whole bay area is just wonderful.
you can LIVE here.

it's as liberal/progressive as can be.

and there's no threat that it's gonna change.

people give propers to the contributions gay folk have made to the area.

it's a slice of heaven.

89. And, if you can afford it
I'm straight (but not narrow), and I love the Bay Area. My husband and I would move to Silicon Valley in a heartbeat, but the cost of housing is double that of the Washington DC area.

48. Thank you all
Honestly, I'm just getting disheartened with the state of the United States. Why is it so hard for people to live and let live. I honestly don't understand it. I guess I'm not wired that way so I can't understand it.

Thanks again, at least you've all given me enough locals for lots of vacation plans for the next 10 years. LOL

Peace and love to all you awesome DUers!

56. Madison Wisconsin
We have the first openly gay congresswoman, Tammy Baldwin. This is a very accepting community where gay people fit in everywhere. We don't need to have a special neighborhoods or businesses where gays are segregated- people don't need to hide. I'm not gay, but I am proud to live in a place where homophobia is negligible.

88. That's true
I've heard that if San Francisco can claim to be the 'Gay Male Capital of the World', Madison is probably the 'Lesbian Capital of the World'. If somebody looks twice at two women holding hands while walking down the street here, they're probably from out of town.

All those wingnut legislators from upstate must hate being here. Or they like it, but they hate that they like it. Or some such wingnut thing...

We have had a fairness ordinance in place for years, and it's probably one of the most progressive mid-sized cities in the middle section of the country.

65. If you want to settle down, Newburgh, NY...
Still relatively affordable, historically diverse to the extreme, small town but urban, never boring. Convenient to scads of open space and the mountains. Right on the Hudson River and commutable to NYC-close enough to dip into what's happening down there for a day trip. Victoriana abounds- we have the largest historic district in NY. I've never experienced a hint of homophobia here- have been here since '89- I was coming from Chelsea, NYC where even there it was common. And as you would expect, a Democratic Party stronghold... ;-)

I'm sorry I can't respond to everyone idividually, but I do appreciate the responses.

As I said before, I've got a lot of places now on my list of "to see in the near future".

Do you think there might be a place where all the men are naked and look like the Brawn man? LOL

Just kidding. They wouldn't have to be naked....all the time. ;-)

70. Atlanta's a very gay-friendly city.
Also Athens (Michael Stipe's hometown). Stipe and the Indigo Girls own (or owned, don't know if they still have it) a club in the Little Five Points section of Atlanta.

The heat and humidity are killer though.

Internationally I can only speak about London - again, very gay-friendly. Actually, Britain is relaxed generally, far more so than the States.

79. Charlottesville, VA
LIberal bastion of VA, very Progressive, large and active GLBT community, very politically activist, can hold hands walking down the pedestrian mall, and the only ones that will really look are the tourists. EVen the local Repubs will ignore you. The only Repub on the city council just lost being reelected. Everyone was shocked he even made it on the council to begin with.

:D ... at least in the United States. San Francisco, Chicago, and NYC are great too. Those are the cities I prefer for many reasons, though I can't stand the Winter up North. Barcelona and Rio de Janeiro are awesome places to live too.

Marriage may not be for everyone, but a place that sanctions it for gays is probably a good one.
