5. 3 out of 7 congress members in Mississippi are Democrats.
I don't live there, I can't vouch for them being true Dems or DINOs, but at least one is standing up to Barbour and the Repukes in the state:

Taylor seeks more Katrina assistance

WASHINGTON - Rep. Gene Taylor asked Gov. Haley Barbour to reject proposals that would offer grant assistance only to homeowners whose houses sustained more than 50 percent in damages from Hurricane Katrina.

6. Unfortunately, their Gov. is one of major Republican slime balls.
He has already equipped all voting places with Diebold machines. So, you can forget about the Mississippi voting results. They are be permanently Republican for as long as the machines run.

14. LOL
Shows what you know, it was our democratic Secretary of State that supported Diebold and put those machines in place.

I'm voting absentee and encouraging everyone I know to do the same.

And don't count Mississippi out -- the Repuke gov backed casinos and the moral majority/christian voters have turned on him.

Anyone he supports is not likely to get the votes they think they should

And, there is a rift in the party, the Lt. Gov and the old school repukes are turning on the Gov and the neo-cons.

Politics as usual won't be usual.

15. Maybe Gulfport/LongBeach?
It was a full page ad in the local papers, from Dick Scruggs to Dumbya.

:)

12. I was on the Mississippi Gulf Coast the first week in January,
volunteering, and I felt as if I was in the Third World. :-(

13. What did you do down there?
Where were you? I'm heading back to Biloxi for 5 months of volunteering. It really was like a third world country, if not a war zone in some places. Ghost towns, maybe....

16. I spent a week down there at an Episcopal-Lutheran center called
Camp Coast Care in Long Beach/Pass Christian. Twelve of us went from my church. The appeal was that we got room (one of 150 cots in a gym) and board (plain food), so our only expense was our airfare (and I had frequent flier miles).

I had intended to help with clean-up operations, but I developed a bad cold, so I stayed in the camp working in the clothing distribution area, the food shelf, and in the over-the-counter drug section of the medical tent. Lots of sorting and stocking and answering questions.

Even just staying in the camp, I sometimes felt as if I was in the Peace Corps, especially in the medical tent, which the nurses in our group said made them feel as if they were part of "MASH."

Since my part of the group arrived at night, I didn't get to see much of the damage until the trip back to the airport. And then I was just stunned.

It was not a comfortable experience (being sick under those conditions was less fun than usual), but I felt that I was able to help a few people in small ways. which was rewarding, and the feeling of community among the volunteers, who came from all over the country and were staying anywhere from a few days to a few months, was phenomenal.

19. I've been looking at that Camp Coast Care.
Right now they group I'm working with put me in with a more evangelical branch of the Lutheran church. :scared: I'm thinking if it gets too Bible-thumping for me, I'm going to check out Camp Coast Care. They look pretty hip from their web site. How did you like staying there?

20. Conditions were primitive--you're sleeping and eating in a school gym
There are four toilets and four showers for each gender. Meals are plain.

I really liked the spirit of the place, though. The director, an Episcopal priest, told the new group of volunteers that our job was to serve the local people, not judge them. Therefore, he didn't want to see any attitudes like, "So and so took too much" or "So and so wouldn't be so sick if he did thus and so." He reminded us that some of the local people had taken in scads of homeless relatives and friends, so that maybe they really needed those ten cans of beans or twelve pairs of jeans.

There is no proselytizing of the recipients, although Bibles and spiritual counseling are available. The volunteers have two meetings per day, one in the morning after breakfast, which is strictly business but ends with "Let us go forth to love and serve the Lord" with the response, "Thanks be to God." (If you don't know, this is one of the standard endings to an Episcopal Eucharist.)

The evening meeting starts with business and ends with an informal Evening Prayer (Vespers). January 6 was the Feast of the Epiphany, so we had a Eucharist that evening instead.

But there are no altar calls, no hellfire and brimstone sermons, and no prohibitions on things like drinking beer in the evenings.

What was amazing to me was that 150 people from all over the country, all jammed together on cots as if in barracks, got along so well.

17. Thanks for this thread intheflow.
How do you save the images found in the before & after section?

I can't seem to save them or capture their properties.

I do so appreciate your support. You better call when you get settled.

18. The before/after I posted here
was already a static before/after on the Sun-Herald site. I don't know how to or if it's possible to get the flash shots.

I also created one of my own before/after shots. I was looking for cheap lodging in Biloxi/Gulfport (all hotel lodging is non-existent!) in case the Lutherans prove too much for this pagan heathen UU. I came up with this before/after, taking the image from the Days Inn web site and my own photo:

Talk with you soon, Friend!
