Two Things That Made Me Happy Yesterday
Yes, happy. A word foreign to most of us of late. But it happened - 2 small, separate events that put a smile on my face. First there was the turkey. We've had a lone, wild turkey hanging around the house lately and I spotted her out back yesterday afternoon, wading through the unmowed, soggy grass. Then I looked again. Little brown dots kept appearing above the blades, quickly disappearing in a trail after the big bird. She's got chicks. Lots of them! (This morning I accidently interrupted her snooze and it was a blur of little, fuzzy things.) Later in the day, I glanced out the same window and on a knoll about 100 feet away stood a doe and her tiny fawn. She was gone before I could get my husband to the window, but I know we'll be watching the little one grow over the summer. (Note to all: my address is a closely guarded secret. Don't let Cheney get it!) Peace.

1. Living in a rural environment
gives me much joy for just the reasons you state here. No matter how bad it gets there is beautiful life just outside the window, until the McMansions take it over or hunting season starts. Enjoy it.

I love it when the little turkeys hatch. We have tons of turkeys around here and it is not uncommon to have to stop for the clutches to cross the road. They don't behave as well as the quails do, they tend to want to scatter and it becomes even more fun to watch.

5. Aha! Clutch - I knew there must be a name for the turkey family.
We have quails, too, but I don't think I've ever seen their babies. So far no McMansions up our dirt road. Another thing to be grateful for. We do have hunters though. I always make a point of stopping to chat with them. I give them a long, sad story about how all the wildlife seems to have disappeared from the hill. They usually give up pretty quickly.

7. LOL I usually
keep a sweatshirt close to the door about animal rights and I slip it on whenever I think the people at the door are looking for permission to hunt, it usually stops them. The best reaction I got was from a guy who just looked at me and said, "Guess not huh."

Watch for the quail to start to leave, whenever the turkey come the quail leave. I have not decided yet if I would rather have turkey or quail, I do miss the quail call.

3. How lucky you are Vinca
I had a couple of serendipities myself yesterday. First, as I was leaving the neighborhood, I noticed a turtle trying to get across the road, so I stopped and helped her along. Then, when I got home from the job, I was doing some yard work, and noticed 3 bunnies chasing each other and playing in the back yard. Those 2 incidences have made me smile all day today.

Enjoy watching the babies grow up. You're so lucky.

4. isn't country living great? I love birds. We had a moose calf yearling
walk around our house yesterday and my five dachshunds nearly had a cow barking at him through the window. Nose to nose. Very cute. fawns rock. chicks roll. :)

6. Wow! Moose! Those aren't terribly common in our neck of the woods.
Usually one will appear along the side of the road either 10 minutes after I've gone past or 10 minutes before. I've never seen one in the wild. We did have a black bear roaming around. I imagine, judging from your state, you've got grizzlies!
