1. Compared to piss water, Bud sucks
Am I'm from Bud's home state, Missouri, and I still can't stand the stuff. It's pushed big here, like Coors is in Colorado, you can't get away from it.

Gave up Bud decades ago, when I could afford to start buying decent beer.

3. Budweiser is an Eastern European Beer
Edited on Wed Jun-07-06 01:40 PM by stepnw1f
That name was stolen long ago from the Czechs I believe. I actually had a real Budweiser several years ago, while visiting family in Germany.

Then again, It may be the American brand... blech

7. Budweisser is a Czech beer. Story here:

Budweisser is an original Czech beer, named after a town of Budweiss, which is a German name for Ceske Budejovice.
It is spelled with a double-s, unlike the US beer. The US won a battle over the trademark name in the US market, so the original Budweisser cannot be sold here under that name. Here it is sold under the name Czechvar. I kid you not, it is the same beer as Budweisser. Go to your local Trader Joe's or some decent alcohol store, and get yourself a Czechvar. You will find the name eske Budejovice on the label.

In a related story, the word "pilsner" is derived from the original Pilsner beer, named after a town of Pils, which is a German name for Plzen. The beer is called Pilsner Urquell and you can even get it in US supermarkets as such. It is the second best beer in the world, so go get it, you won't regret. The best beer in the world comes from another Czech brewery. t is called Velkopopovicky Kozel. It comes from a town of Velke Popovice. I regret to say that I have not seen this wonderful beer in the US.

Go for Pilsner Urquell, I personally like it a lot better than Budweisser (aka Czechvar).

10. I went to Prague last year...
The beer you are referring to is called Budvar..(the Real Budwieser)..

It is much better than the American Budweiser, as I'm sure you are aware...The beer they will be serving at the World Cup will be the American Budweiser !!!

14. I too, drank Budvar in Prague along with many beers at an ancient brewery.
Those people know how to make beer! The brewery that I visited had been making beer since the 1300 or 1400s. :wow:

Budweiser being sold in Germany is so very wrong. They should sell good weiss bier like Paulaner.

25. Some years back, the AMIS
tried to sue the original Budweiser (which is quite tasty) for the name.

The BEER SCANDAL is a biggie. Let's see how their stadium sales go. Ami Bud ist PISSWASSER, be CERTAIN it's been "re-formulated" for the World Cup. This will be interesting. (I'm downing a Paulaner as I type. Wie leckeres BROT!)

4. I think plenty of them are
There's a non-serious celebrity sports quiz TV show in the UK, and with the World Cup coming up, they had a couple of German sportsmen taking part (Boris Becker and a German footballer). It was all they could do to stop them libelling Budweiser as piss.

What does the size of German brewers have to do with the relative quiality of American Budweiser and German beers?

8. Here's something interesting
I'll try to find where I read it and post a link, but apparently the Germans are not too happy that Bud is the Official beer. They are setting up beer tents outside the stadium that will sell German beer, and are encouraging fans to only drink wine inside the stadium.

22. Here's a link
http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006/how-to-avoid-drinking-budweiser-at-the-world-cup.html

As if being forced to slug back awful American beer at the World Cup stadiums in Germany isn’t bad enough, today we learn that the “King of Beers” will also be the official beer of World Cup 2010 in South Africa. Haven’t the South Africans suffered enough already with that whole Apartheid fiasco?

For those who haven’t had a Bud before, it is a bit like drinking paint thinner. Only it doesn’t taste as good. We thoroughly agree with the German politician Franz Maget who said, “We have a duty to public welfare and must not poison visitors to World Cup venues.” This, my friends, is a greater threat than any Bird Flu.

The solution around this catastrophic situation is to get your drink on early and often. Head to a nearby pub a few hours before the match and enjoy the fine local German or South African beers. When the world starts to feel like it is spinning, it is time to head to the stadium. Along the way stop by a convenience store, buy yourself a flask, fill it with the beverage of your choice, and hide it somewhere on your body

16. Legally, Budweiser cant be sold as beer in Germany
German beer purity law of 1615 says that beer can only be brewed with four ingredients - barley, hops, yeast, and water. Any substitution (like rice, which Budweiser uses) means that the beer cannot be sold as beer in Germany. So when the world cup is in Germany, that means that Budweiser, which is the official sponsor of World Cup, wont be able to sell their "beer" there.

18. Not true any more
From your Wikipedia link:

European Court of Justice ruling led to the Reinheitsgebot being lifted, allowing ingredients beyond what is listed in the Biergesetz; this meant that anything allowed in other foods was thus also allowed in beer. The ingredient requirements have since been moved from the Biersteuergesetz into the regular food additives laws, though beer brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot receive special treatment as a protected, "traditional" food.

Most German breweries continued to comply with the Biergesetz, often claiming compliance with the Reinheitsgebot even when it is patently incorrect (for example, for wheat beers, which were prohibited by the Reinheitsgebot), using this compliance as a valuable marketing tool.

and explained at much greater length in your other link.

Budweiser (the American company, not the Czech brewery) bought the exclusive rights from fifa. However, because the public outrage was too big, Bud was forced to subcontract Bitburger to provide beer.

So it'll be Bud, Bitburger and a few local breweries who managed to lobby their way in.

The whole "sponsor" thing is insane. Soft drinks will only be sold in bottles, despite the security risk, because the sponsor (Coca Cola) wants people to see the bottles on TV. People will be able to pay with credit cards, but only with cards from the sponsor: Mastercard. It goes on and on and on. Insane.
