Sandra Day O'Connor US risks edging near to dictatorship
Sandra Day O'Connor, a Republican-appointed judge who retired last month after 24 years on the supreme court, has said the US is in danger of edging towards dictatorship if the party's rightwingers continue to attack the judiciary.

It was your political decision to select W, contradicting the wishes of the majority of Americans and contrary to both the spirit and the text of the Constitution, that created the right wing dictatorship. I hope you are happy.

To let her know that it was the coward's way out.

Yes, her husband is sick, but after saddling us with that piece of shit bush, the least she could do it stand and protect the country she betrayed.

Maybe it's time to send her another white feather, to remind her that she's still a coward and her words are meaningless swill.

22. Well look who just bought her ticket to get on the clue bus!
Moderate or no, Sandra Day O'Connor helped to enable this shift towards dictatorship with her vote in Bush v. Gore in 2000. And after watching * in action for over 5 years, she further allowed this "right-wing attack on the judiciary" by stepping down and remaining silent while * replaced her with a right-wing zealot like Alito. And now she wants to spread the warning about our slide towards dictatorship, instead of staying on the bench and actually trying to do something about it?!?!?!?!

As with Mary Cheney, she has absolutely no fucking right to complain about what she helped to bring about. I guess it's good that she's speaking out, but too little too late, IMHO. She will only redeem herself if/when she takes a prominent role in bringing an end to the reign of * and his cabal.

Yeap, talking about how much our country is FUBARED is a lot easier than actually doing something about it.

49. She didn't have a choice
Saying that one vote in one county is counted different than another vote in another county is a violation of the 14th amendment of equal protection.

The count voted 7-2 that the way the recounts were being conducted was unconstiutional. That's a sound decision.
The 5-4 decision was to stop the recounting process.

Florida was where the giant fuckup occured. Not the Supreme Court.

:nuke: if that is unconstitutional, then why wasn't there a nationwide effort to standardize vote counting? :nuke:

51. Pick up the constitution
A national voting standard cannot be forced upon the states by the federal government. Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution states:
"Each state shall appoint, in such manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a number of electors, equal to the whole number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress..."

The federal government has no constitutional authority to dictate to a state how an election is to be conducted. That's the state's decision. The decision of the supreme court was that the state must make a standard that is made for all counties. In other words, it is unconstitutional that a hanging chad be counted as a vote in Dade county but not a vote in Palm Beach County.

That was the major problem in Florida in the election. Every county was counting the votes a different way.

Since then, Florida changed the law so that there is now a voting standard in that state that is the same for each and every county.

52. She had every choice-- she chose to interpret the constitution in
such a way that she could retire under a Republican administration. The news reports and other items support this.

To argue otherwise would mean that the decision should have been 9-0 which it wasn't.

She HAD a choice.

We, alas, have to live with it.

53. Shut the fuck up Sandra - you created the dictatorship
A little to late for remorse. I hope you rot in hell thinking of the people who have suffered and died because of what YOU, Rehnquist, Thomas, Scalia and Kennedy created!

Do I seem a bit angry - you betcha. She could have stopped this but even she said she wanted to retire and do it underneath a republican president. So if anything she's more to blame. We knew how the evil 3 of Rehnquist, Scalia and Thomas would vote. But Kennedy and O'Conner were sometimes the voice of reason (they both support RoeVWade) but this time they failed us

54. what utter gall
In her address to an audience of corporate lawyers on Thursday, Ms O'Connor singled out a warning to the judiciary issued last year by Tom DeLay, the former Republican leader in the House of Representatives, over a court ruling in a controversial "right to die" case.

"I want you to tune your ears to these attacks ... You have an obligation to speak up.

"Statutes and constitutions do not protect judicial independence - people do," the retired supreme court justice said.

This coming from the woman who was publicly very vocally appalled when it looked like Gore would win Florida and who used the equal protection clause to protect Bush from the will of the electorate. :puke:
