Why is the government refusing to hire American workers?
I was watching CNN yesterday briefly at work, and they had a piece on the Utah National Guard arriving in Texas. Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but I had only heard they were only going to be used in "support roles", which to me is something like setting up and monitoring communication stations, mobile HQs, monitoring points, etc. Not that I'm happy with even that much, mind you...

Then I heard that their job is to start building Bush's Great Border Wall! Forget about the arguments regarding how practical or moral such a thing is. At the very least Bush could be hiring real local construction crews, which would pump some money into the local economy. Why won't he allow working americans to benefit from his policies?

I mentioned this to a co-worker, and he replied with what I at first thought was a non-sequitur:"National Guard troops are deployed during national emergencies." he firmly declared.

I replied, "Well, yeah, but the immigration issue isn't a national emergency..."

He said, louder, "YES IT IS!".

"But illegal immigration has been going on for decades, why is it an emergency now?"

At this point, he was beet red and breathing heavily. With a visible effort, he got his voice under control and tersely stated, "Look, I refuse to discuss this with you. It's what I believe, and you're not going to change my mind."

I agreed, then spun him up again on the anti-gay marriage amendment...

2. heh... actually, it often is on the TV....
I was surprised to see CNN on instead. Maybe he had been overruled that day by the other people in the room.
