Any of my fellow San Diegan's that have chanced to stroll up into the 50th district, can attest to one thing. It’s rich, and white. Lily white. Huge beach houses with antique furnishings on white carpets and black pianos overlooking expensive paintings on the walls. In short, these are old money families of people that voted for Dewey and Hoover. Not the most Democrat friendly stretch of town, in an already overwhelmingly Republican county.
I asked a few of my relatives up in the 50th, who they were voting for, and every single one of them was apathetic, and sick to death of everything that has been happening here for the past two years, to the point that they are so damn drained, that they don’t even feel like putting forth the effort to go out and vote today. Like everything is just a complete waste of time, and why bother? Sad but true.
Unfortunately, a whole lot of us here in San Diego with a “Dem” on our voter registration card here feel just that; Beat down, and flat out drained, and wondering why the fuck should we even try any more. It goes WAY beyond the Duke Cunningham fiasco, and encompasses everything from the City Council scandal locally, to the ripping out of office of a legitimately elected governor so that they could install a Bushco shill.
I can’t even turn my TV on any more, it makes me so ill; ad, after ad, after fucking ad, that give absolutely no message whatsoever of a Republican plan, but taking an almost perverse pleasure in painting Liberals as these evil horrible tyrants that want to take all of your money, force your children to have abortions, and sell all of California to Mexico. The Anti-Busby ads are the worst, most condescending, lowest common denominator pandering, pile of horse shit I have ever seen, and just makes us so sick, that it’s almost mind numbing. Literally every commercial between programs is for this race, and the GOP has so much money to dump into this election, that they are outnumbering the Dems commercial spots by an easy 10 to 1.
My in-laws are Busby supporters, and I helped them hang ads on doors. Again, the no money thing came back to hit us, this time manifesting itself awful little hand drawn maps, and really no help except for the few of us that showed up to help. At Busby’s headquarters they had a couple of people cold calling, but there were not many resources to do much else. The work got done, but it was kind of sloppy, and irritating in a “we could have done so much better if we just had a few more dollars, and a few more people that cared” sort of a way.
Anyway, if I drop out for a few days after this election to take a break from all things political for a while, now you all know why.
I’m heading out to vote now…
