are to be released BY THE IRAQI PM!!

Iraq's PM gives the order to free 2500 US-held prisoners

EMBATTLED Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki today ordered the release of 2500 prisoners held by the US with no clear evidence against them.

He said the move was aimed at reaching a "national reconciliation", with the first 500 inmates due to be freed tomorrow.

In a clear reference to the minority Sunni community, which forms the backbone of the insurgency against his US-backed government, he said: "This is a strong move which will encourage others."

that still leaves hundreds still imprisoned without charges. The 2500 figure seems arbitrary. Logic tells us that many more are languishing in U.S.-run prisons without just cause.

Nice touch by the PM, though. He's determined to demonstrate some independence from the occupiers, his mentors.
