Protect marriage, criminalize divorce
or let the church marry people (church rules... you could have a Catholic marriage = hetero no divorce... or you could have some zen temple marriage gay with divorce).. Thoughts DU?

1. I'm not sure how your text fits in with your subject,
But for as long as I can remember, I've thought the State had no right or role in regards to marriage. If you want a Catholic marriage, have one. You should not receive any benefits or punishments - tax, social, or otherwise - based on whether or not you are married.

10. Marriage is controlled by the State. A Clergyman must be recognized
by the State. Remember the lines "by the power invested in me by the State of..."

And, technically, any service conducted by a judge or other non-clergy is a "Civil Union".

Further, there is no law anywhere saying that a Clergyman can't refuse to marry someone.

2. No Government involvement in Marriage at all
Civil unions for everybody (meaning straight people as well) to convey the legal benefits of marriage (inheritance, hospital visitation, and so on).

5. Some countries have Civil Marriages....
Sometimes just visits to the Registrar's office.

A religious ceremony may follow, if the couple wishes.

3. The same kooks want to ban divorce too.
I guess it's hard to hit your wife when she keeps running away.

So I guess you won't get much argument from them.

6. I'm sorry, but I disagree with both. Marriage doesn't need to be protected
by any one other than the two people directly involved in it. Divorce should not be criminalized...what do you want to do, charge someone with a felony? Divorce should be available with the least amount of hassle. Why should anyone force someone to remain in a loveless marriage?

8. That makes about as much sense...
...as saying, since we wish to allow gays etc. to be able to join together, we believe in doing away with marriage and letting everyone decide for themselves what it is.

9. Criminalizing divorce is just as stupid
as banning gay marriage.
