Evan Bayh: "I would'nt cast the same vote today as I did then." (Iraq)
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 12:16 PM by WI_DEM
He also says that if the Iraqi government can't get their shit together in the next 6-8 weeks "We're out."

p.s.
given the answers below (which I totally understand the reasons behind) is it better that someone who did vote for the resolution not change his mind or be like Hillary Clinton and say, "I'd still vote for it."?

1. Too late. He voted for the IWR...now he owns it.

I knew the cabal was lying. Why didn't he and all the rest of the assholes who voted for the war?

7. Either we are all super geniuses
or they are of substandard intellect or they thought it was an outstanding idea at the time & chose to ignore our fervent pleas for restraint. As appealing as I find the first option, I really think the latter is the real reason for their votes in favor of the IWR.

3. I'd like to think that the letters I've written him have paid off.
But the cynical side of me says he may just be repositioning himself to the polls.

5. Well, I suppose late to the party is better than not showing
But I still don't believe that this exonerates the man, or anybody else who voted for the IWR. Millions upon millions nationwide had the good common sense not to believe Bush's bullshit. Millions upon millions took to the street, and contacted their reps in order to try and prevent the IWR from passing. If Bayh had done his simple Constitutional duty, to represent his constituents, then he would have never voted for the IWR, since the voice of the people was running 268-1 against the IWR. All Bayh had to do was his job, yet instead he was looking out for his own political well-being instead. Sorry, but this is too little too late. Hundreds of thousands are dead because of his mistake, this shouldn't entitle him to another chance.

If he and the others who voted for the IWR are willing to put their own careers ahead of the will of the people, why in the hell should we give them a pass on it? They put their own well being ahead of doing their job, and tens of thousands have died for no good reason because of their selfishness. In my book this doesn't merit them getting another term in office. If we want reps to do the will of the people, then continuing to reward them when they fuck up, especially as spectacularly as this fuck up, will only mean that they will continue to do the same ol' same ol', looking out for their own welfare ahead of the will of their contstituents.

10. Yep. Put up or shut up
I could forgive someone for the initial vote, but ONLY if I'm convinced that they wouldn't allow themselves to used like that again.

I'm not sure that I believe him when he says that if it doesn't turn around in the next few weeks that we should get out. I just don't trust him. He would have to go a long way to prove to me that he doesn't have plans to further the neocons/PNAC foreign policy agenda.

8. Well, Evan...hindsights 20-20. What are you doing TODAY!!!!
I can't say that I've seen Senator Bayh giving a passionate oration on the Senate floor about this topic lately. Put up or shut up, Evan.

9. Please understand Bayh's position.
He is a senator from Indiana, not Massachusetts. This is a very strong message from a guy who has to stand for reelection in a conservative leaning state.

I met Evan Bayh in the 1990's. He is a very good person and would make an excellent president. No, he is not my number one choice, but I could support him long before I could support some of the other perceived front runners (e.g., Sen Clinton).

11. FWIW, uber-conservative fundy nut John Hostettler
Republican US rep. from Indiana voted against IWR, yet somehow managed to get re-elected.

As did: Rep. John Duncan of Tennessee, Rep. Amo Houghton of New York, Rep. Jim Leach of Iowa, Rep. Constance Morella of Maryland, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas and Sen. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island.

All the Reps but Morella were re-elected. Chafee's fate remains to be seen.

Bayh had a chance to take a meaningful stance, but abdicated, in the face of obvious and blatant lies.

We wouldn't be in this mess if they didn't vote for the IWR. They should have listened to their constituents and chose not to. The ONLY reason he's saying this now is because he wants to run for President. He hasn't changed my mind about him. He's DLC AND he voted for the IWR. That's all I need to know. That's 2 strikes against him. The Bankruptcy Bill...3 strikes. Likes privatizing SS? 4 strikes. Voted for the tax cuts? 5 strikes.

Cons: Absolutely despised by the party's liberal wing. Voted for the war in Iraq, the bankruptcy bill, both Bush tax cuts, and other important parts of the Republican agenda. On the record favoring partially-privatizing Social Security

The man is on record favoring partially-privatizing SS??? He voted for the bankruptcy bill and the psycho's tax cuts? No. Evan Bayh will NEVER get a vote from me.

14. He was the one
who snarled "the party is being taken over by leftists" when the antiwar factions coalesced into the Dean insurgency. The DLC morons were not about to let the opportunity for right-thinking Democrats to demonstrate their "tough-minded", "muscular" stances slip out of their grasp, and now look where we are. So a few of them have "regrets" as the biggest foreign policy clusterfuck in 50 years balloons to monstrous size. It still doesn't stop them from banging the we're-as-tough-as-Republicans-you'd-better-believe-it drum.

All a candidate has to do is just Say "Sorry" about an erroneous vote on a matter of War and Peace at the cost of billions that killed thousands and still rages on .....and one may be rewarded with the title of Leader of the Free World and Commander in Chief. :eyes:
