My LTE to the NY Times re: the story of the air mask effectiveness and availability down at the WTC clean-up:

"My husband was NYC fireman, involved in the clean-up at the World Trade Center. He has been out of the Fire Department for 3 years now, disabled due to asthma from that clean-up. When Christine Todd Whitman from the EPA said that the air quality was fine, I had serious doubts; in fact, from the moment that the Towers fell, I told anyone who would listen that the only people who should be allowed down there were the men and women in the white Haz-Mat suits. But it was not to be - the firemen, of course, loyally wanted to find their coworkers, and Mayor Guiliani and President Bush found the firemens' presence down there to be a wonderful opportunity for some excellent photo-ops and "bullhorn moments." Neither of them cared about the safety of the workers or they would not have allowed anyone not fully protected onto that pile.
