U.S. Troops in Iraq to Get Ethics Training
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 01:53 AM by BuffyTheFundieSlayer
The U.S. military ordered coalition troops in Iraq on Thursday to undergo special training in ethics and "the values that separate us from our enemies" in the wake of allegations that Marines killed two dozen unarmed civilians in Haditha.

"As military professionals, it is important that we take time to reflect on the values that separate us from our enemies," Lt. Gen. Peter Chiarelli, the No. 2 U.S. general in Iraq, said in a statement. "The challenge for us is to make sure the actions of a few do not tarnish the good work of the many."

"I think it's a healthy thing," said Howard Prince, director of the Center for Ethical Leadership at the University of Texas at Austin. "It's time to step back and do refresher training to remind those how the United States wages war."

However, Prince, a retired Army general, cautioned that training needs to be constantly reinforced. "I think it'll have an effect, but the effect won't be as powerful if it's not sustained by continuous efforts on part of leadership at every level," he said.

What exactly are these values that "separate us from our enemies"?

And ethics training after all these years? Why not before they were sent over there?

That's EXACTLY the kind of bigotry that made those Marines think they had the right to kill children in the first place.

Our form of government is better than theirs.

Our morals are superior to theirs.

Our lives are more valuable than theirs.

The only things that keep these guys from going berserk is training, rigid enforcement of the rules and strong leadership.

Telling them that they're better than the enemy is a great way to make sure what happened in Haditha happens again.

3. No amount of window-dressing can make a pile of shit
look like gold. A Vermilion outhouse is still a shit pot and it still reeks of shit

What America has done and continues to do in Iraq can't be "retrained" away...

5. Reminds me of that incident with the NYPD
a few years ago where some cops were sentenced with "sensitivity training" or "anger management" for shoving a broomstick up some black guy's ass. I don't know about anyone else, but I feel that at that point, we are way beyond these type of interventions making any difference.

7. How about reinstating the Geneva Conventions?!
If all the war criminals at the top of this regime had not broken that treaty, if Attorney Generalissimo Alberto "Torquemada" Gonzales had not said the Geneva Conventions had been "rendered quaint" by the events of 9-11 -- do you think our government would even be having this discussion?

Everyone from the President to the Pentagon gave those kids permission to descend into barbarity, and even gave some of them training in torture.
