On 9/11, were our land borders completely closed? If so, for how long?

Couldn't seem to find information on it. If ppl don't know off the top of their heads, where's a good place to look?

P.S.: I posted this in the 9/11 forum with no response. In 4+ years on DU, I have never cross-posted a message but I haven't been able to turn up anything on this and could really use any help if anyone remembers/knows anything.

1. no, that was my hubby's main complaint
he said we needed to shut down the borders, sweep the interior and then allow limited entry ways

but hard to do......

2. I thought the borders WERE closed
and navy destroyers patrolled up and down both coasts.

3. See I thought I'd read somewhere that we closed the Canadian and...
...Mexican borders, stopped all traffic into and out of the country- I just keep failing to find the on a search. The reason why I'm even asking is I had the most dreadful thought a few nights ago- I was wondering at what point you would beyond a shadow of a doubt know that you were in a totalitarian state. One possible answer would be you couldn't leave the country, like in East Germany or in the former Soviet Union.

Then I thought, hell, all we need is another terrorist attack and Bush could close the borders indefinitely to "citizens" traveling and force everything via commercial air travel. Cargo would still be let in and out, possibly- but that might even be disrupted in the long-term in some weird attempt to save the economy. If Americans are physically unable to purchase imported goods, well you get where I'm going with this.

I know it's pretty far-fetched but I entertain a great many far-fetched thoughts without actually believing them...

Thanks,

PB

4. People were stuck in airports in Canada for 3 days. Don't know when the
border re-opened.
