MILAN — Prosecutors will ask Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi’s government to request the US to extradite 22 suspects in the alleged kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric in Milan by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Armando Spataro said yesterday he would ask Justice Minister Clemente Mastella to forward the extradition requests previously rejected by his predecessor, Roberto Castelli.

Spataro is seeking the arrest of the suspects accused of kidnapping, conspiracy and violating Italy’s national sovereignty in abducting the Egyptian Muslim preacher from a Milan street.

The suspects who allegedly kidnapped Egyptian citizen Nas Osama Moustafa Hassan, also known as Omar, are all CIA agents, according to Italian court documents.
