Is it possible for one person or one group to simultaneously be your best friend and your worst enemy at the same time? With George Bush's polls now sitting someplace close to 33% or less, we have to assume there must be 67%, or two-thirds, that do not agree with him or the Republican Party. Granted, all of those in opposition may not be part of the Democratic Party or the "liberal" movement, but many of them have re-associated themselves with the liberals and the Democrats. And looking at conservative Democrats such as Joe Lieberman, it is difficult to argue that people have moved to the right at all.
In my opinion, Democrats no longer need to be ashamed or fearful of being called "liberals". The same people who gave a bad name to liberals are now the same people that are giving liberalism a good name. They are indeed our worst enemy and our best friend. They are our worst enemy in that they have vilified us for years but now, they are our best friend, because by their actions, their policies, their incompetence, they have restored liberalism as the credible alternative to the disastrous policies of the so-called "conservatives".
In my opinion, this is a truth that will not be realized until after the next elections. Only then will people understand the great political shift that has taken place. Liberalism will be restored to its rightful position as the only rational philosophy for our nation. The pendulum is swinging as we speak.
The challenge for the Democratic Party is take advantage of the shift. They need to be bold and courageous in their beliefs. They should not hesitate to propose solutions to the bare excesses of the so-called conservatives or to propose policies that will benefit the majority of Americans, rather than the wealthy few at the top. The Republican Party has exposed its true self to the American people and they do not like it.
