What a movie--this is one of the greatest movies ever made, right up there with "It's a Wonderful Life," "Citizen Kane," and King Vidor's "The Crowd" from 1928! I had never watched the whole thing before, and as a matter of fact, I don't think the media has ever played this one on TV as often as any number of lesser movies over the years. It was haunting--it connected up with so many things going on right now, and was actually so accurate about Senate procedure on the Floor, that it was like a direct message to us, from that generation. The phony bill that only existed to funnel graft to one Senator, the corporate boss actually controlling everything, the phony media-trumped-up slander campaign against the new Senator Smith, that deteriorated to violent attacks on the kids distributing the pro-Smith paper, all masquerading as "public opinion"--incredible; it all fit, it was all concrete. It was inspiring; Smith fought alone, but actually had a lot of support from people who also had morals and knew the truth, and hated the corruption. It all fits.
When the issues of a political movie don't fit the era when you were watching it, it all seems abstract and you don't understand what they were talking about. This was so clear it was like watching C-SPAN. Very exciting and upsetting, both. Reminds you again of why Frank Capra, Jimmy Stewart, and Jean Arthur, were so great. The way the story went along, it was almost like a documentary--God, what a movie. It was great! Great TCM commentary by Robert Osborne and Molly Haskell, too. It will replay tomorrow (Sunday) at 6 PM, Eastern.
