9. Hell, South Carolina has 46 - that's 3 more than Texas!
Primarily "Neo-Confederate", which probably means they like to display the stars and bars, but those types are all over in every state...sigh...some of these knuckle-draggers live in my own small town here in Iowa.

10. I lived in SC for 6 years. The map looks pretty accurate to me!
The Confederate flag is a really BIG thing there, and I refused to go to work one Saturday because there was a scheduled Klan rally about 2 miles away and I would have had to drive through that little town to get to work.

12. Things like Klan rallies are still considered an oddity around here - I
couldn't imagine living somewhere where they were so commonplace that you literally had to plan your day around avoiding them...

14. Believe me, it freaked me out! I was born and raised in Pgh. Pa.
and the only thing I knew about the klan was from books and stories people told. I honestly thought they faded into oblivion...until I moved to SC.

I've never seen anyone in a sheet, and I really don't know if they wore them to that rally or not. All I knew was that the announcement was in the newspaper that the rally was scheduled for Saturday with the time and place (which happened to be at the local high school!). I am afraid of people like that, and I'm white! I was the accounting agr. where I worked then, and I worked at least a few hours every Saturday, but I told them I wasn't going to be there THAT Sat!

23. Anyone notice that two of the states with no recognized groups (ME, VT)
are among the whitest in the country? There are plenty of bigots in those states but there is also a lot of MYOB.

It's odd that Berlin, NH has an active KKK cell because that's a heavily French-Canadian and therefore heavily Catholic area. I thought the sheeted ones weren't fond of Papists.

27. Just be careful if you do come

There was an incident with a link to some Aryan skinheads in the south of the state last year.

And there were some World Church of the Creator types in Rio Rancho (outside Albuquerque) a few years ago, distributing flyers.

It's better than Texas or South Carolina, to be sure, but I don't think any state is totally immune.

Just because a state doesn't have an organized group listed doesn't mean there aren't the few occasional vermin causing trouble anyway. A black lady in (blue, liberal) Santa Fe found a noose hanging from the tree in her front yard a year or two ago.

I predict an upswing in the number of "Minutemen" types setting up shop closer to the border.

What I want to know is why no one's doing anything about THESE 'terra-ists.'

here in Austin Texas...check out their site. What rightwing religious nutjobs. They quote actually believing that the King James version of the bible is the "perfect word". The numbnut actually has a radio broadcast. Does anyone know about this nutgroup? Nuttier than squirrel turds I say.

20. Excellent site. Why aren't the Minutemen listed?
Edited on Sat Jun-03-06 09:10 AM by UTUSN
And before somebody screams about what PATRIOTS they are, such screamers should check out the Southern Poverty Law Center site. The link below is only one of several articles there. On edit: Oh, just noticed that the o.p.'s link is FROM the SPLC.

The Minutemen's current fence-building project in AZ has yielded much sad laughter: 1) Univision's camera panned over to a stack of bags of cement, each bag with the logo "MEZCLA CONCRETO" (concrete mix). Yaas, the bozos are using MEXICAN materials for their project. 2) They have been all over the media about how they "modified their fence" (the razors) for the benefit of the rancher's CATTLE. Yaas, a burger on hoofs is much more valuable than two-legged striving-to-be-alive types. 3) And Governor GOODHAIR of TX is going to mount cameras along the border so that the shyer type racists can monitor and report via the internet from the comfort of their own homes in their underwear.

Anti-Immigration Groups
Minuteman Founder Said to Tolerate Neo-Nazis in Campaign

Neo-Nazis volunteered for Jim Gilchrist's recent congressional campaign and distributed racist propaganda at Gilchrist rallies with the full knowledge of the Minuteman Project co-founder and his campaign managers, according to a former Gilchrist campaign volunteer whose account is supported by photographs, video footage and postings on the white supremacist Web site Stormfront.

"They were basically allowing Skinheads and white nationalists to work the phone banks and do IT and distribute National Alliance fliers targeting non-whites," Cliff May, a dance instructor in Orange County, Calif., told the Intelligence Report. "When I told Mary and Eldon that I didn't want to work for a campaign that was tainted by white supremacy in any way, they told me not to cause a stir. ....
