I have a 5 year old son with a bilateral cleft lip/palate. I just like to see how things are worded on sites that speak of alcohol consumption and how it can relate to cleft lip/palate because there's a huge misconception still lingering out there that the mother must have done "something wrong" for a child to be afflicted with this birth defect.

I'm glad that you were able to get a diagnosis for your son. Many people don't like to hear that their child has FAS but it helps parents concentrate on what tools are available to help their children get though because, of course, there is no "cure". My son was adopted from Ukraine and as a result I'm associated with, literally, hundreds of families for whom FAS is a major topic of conversation. Because so many of the non-physical characteristics of FAS (ADHD, Sensory Integration Dysfunction, etc.) are also symptoms of other conditions, it's important to try and get a definitive diagnosis because it is well known that these conditions can also be a result of the ill-effects associated with instutionalization.

My best to you and your son! My nephew (not adopted), has FAS with significant craniofacial abnormalities. He has some behavioral challenges but is as smart as a whip and I love him to pieces!
