the GOP is sending out its BIG GUNS to squash Busby... read on
I live in San Diego. In the last 10 minutes
I have received recorded messages on my telephone
from VP Dick Cheney and another from John McCain
asking that I vote for Bilbray for Congress.
What's next? The Bushman calling?

6. Different District (but still San Diego)
Claims Bilbray endorsed him, though. 'Course also claims the missed child support payments were for "two or three months" when he had an injured back (his paycheck was garnished for four years), the abuse complaint was to "get him out of the house" (that was wife #2) and being let go from the Navy halfway through Basic was "a reduction in force." He was later in the Army for three years - claims it was in the "seventies" (which makes him sound like a Vietnam Vet) and the Army says it was in the eighties...said he "got the date wrong." Three years in the friggin' Army & you can't remember the DECADE??? I lived in a barracks "neighborhood" in high school (long story) and we had some MONSTER parties, but I always knew what fucking DECADE it was!

intead of a personal appearance. I read McCain was pissed at Bilbray for not supporting his immigration stand and refused to appear with him.

A phone call from Cheney would definitely make me for for Francine.

15. Media Matters points out Faux News is lying about Busby's SS for illegals
Check out this article that Media Matters has on how Fox News through "fancy editing" is trying to make it sound like Busby is for providing Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants. Totally bogus BS. If you phone bank this weekend, make sure you correct it with the info that Media Matters provides here if a voter has been propagandized by this! The video clip is here...

http://mediamatters.org/items/200606020007

Garrett falsely framed Busby's support for Senate immigration bill as wanting to give Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants

Summary: On Fox News' Special Report, correspondent Major Garrett falsely claimed that Democratic congressional candidate Francine Busby "endorses providing" Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants. Garrett appeared to be distorting Busby's support for a recently passed Senate immigration bill in the same way Busby's Republican opponent, Brian Bilbray, did. In fact, the Senate's legislation would do nothing to change the current prohibition on illegal immigrants receiving Social Security benefits.

On the May 31 edition of Fox News' Special Report with Brit Hume, correspondent Major Garrett falsely claimed that Democratic congressional candidate Francine Busby "endorses providing" Social Security benefits "to people who are here illegally." Garrett appeared to be distorting Busby's support for a http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00157">recently passed Senate immigration bill in the same way Busby's Republican opponent, Brian Bilbray did -- as giving illegal immigrants Social Security benefits. In fact, the Senate's legislation would do nothing to change the current prohibition on illegal immigrants receiving Social Security benefits.

Busby and Bilbray are http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-duke12apr12,1,3783754.story">running in a special election to represent California's 50th district in Congress, replacing former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, who was recently http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/politics/cunningham/20060304-9999-1n4duke.html">sentenced to more than eight years in prison after he pleaded guilty to http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/politics/cunningham/images/051128cunningham_plea.pdf">tax evasion and conspiracy to commit bribery, mail fraud, and tax evasion.

In his report, Garrett noted Bilbray's opposition to the bill and then reported that, according to Bilbray, voters do not support "the benefits tucked inside McCain's bill." Garrett then quoted Bilbray, who falsely asserted that one of those "benefits" was that the bill would "giv Social Security benefits to people who are here illegally." Garrett then repeated Bilbray's distorted representation of the bill to describe Busby's support for the bill, saying, "Busby endorses providing both of these benefits to illegals."

16. RW blog site is LYING about Busby recruiting illegals to vote for her.

This attack is a bit more insidious and looks like it's starting to spread through the Wingnut echo chamber of blog sites. Here's one of the echo chamber sites that registered a hit on Google News searches...

http://wizbangblog.com/2006/06/03/california-democrat-stumping-for-illegal-alien-votes.php

It is pointing to this site which has an MP3 file on it:

http://www.exposetheleft.com/2006/06/02/busby/

It claims the following comments in an audio clip refer to Francine encouraging aliens to vote. I'm sure she can probably correct this BS...

Busby: "Well sure, everybody can help. Yeah, absolutely. You can all help. Yeah, you don't need papers for voting, you don'tneed to be a registered voter to help."

It looks like many site visitors are already adding comments to this page that are taking issue with their conclusions already, but itprobably wouldn't hurt to slam this before it starts getting "echoed" other places without the comments reminding people of reality.

Folks it looks like the attack machine is now in full gear, as the poster above indicates. They know the DCCC and other Dems are mobilized to responde to their B.S., so it looks like they've tried to lull us into complacency with the earlier polls showing her ahead, and with some of these recent events (minutemen endorsing Griffith), Viriginia residency, McCain dis, Bill Hauf and Steve Baldwin dis's, etc. Don't have any of it. Now is the time to keep informed on the bull shit they are throwing to everyone around here and make sure that those swing voters are engated and will know they are voting the right way when these lies are explained to them.

17. This is the first test of whether the Senate Immigration bill
can fuck up Democrats running in "immigration weary" districts. I actually know Brian Bilbray. I grew up in Imperial Beach. I remember when Brian ran for mayor of IB when he was a lifeguard. He threw a keg party to register people to vote for him. He won. He was the youngest person to ever be elected mayor. He's actually pretty moderate. I've been worried about a possible backlash from voters in border states and Bilbray's district is actually ON the border. When you live on the border, illegal immigration is something that makes you foam at the mouth. It's very possible that Democrats will cross over and vote for Bilbray ONLY because of the immigration issue. We'll see...

sign up to do phone banks with Moveon.org

I used their web based system in the runoff and it works great. Donate an hour. Do your part.

20. Be prepared to deal with voters who might be pissed at overcalling...
You need to have a way of apologizing and still convincing them to vote for Busby. They may tell you that your call convinced them to either stay at home or vote for the other side in some instances because they're tired of people calling them.

This is very real this election and happened earlier in the April initial special election too. Part of the problem with the extra phone banking by moveon.org, etc. is that there isn't enough coordination as there should be to prevent people from calling some people again which you sense are "closed" one way or the other in their decision-making process. Sometimes you have made your pitch and you should walk away as any more efforts to "sell" them will be destructive instead of constructive.

I'm guessing that we still don't have that needed level of tracking yet to prevent this from happening. Add to that, voters around here are just burned out on elections. We've already had the earlier April election, the Arnold election, and the earlier special elections to replace the mayor too. I think that might also be affecting the number of volunteer activists around here too. They are tired too. I know I am.

It's good to be having others from moveon.org helping out in that regard. Just have some good ways prepared of dealing with voters that are sick of people calling them too much. I have a feeling we're going to see even more of that this weekend.

21. I made dozens of calls and didn't have one hang-up
even the people who voted Repub didn't hang up. Yes there may be some duplication but I don't see it as a big problem in light of the stakes.

As far the Moveon system, it works flawlessly. Its one of the best contact management systems I've used. Your points are well taken but I would rather have a few pissed off people if I can get a dozen votes for our side.

22. By all means help out calling!
And you are right, that it is still worth picking up those extra votes now! I'm just saying that if you can be prepared for those that are being overcalled, you can be that much more of an effective help in maximizing the number of voters we turn out. And perhaps those at Dem headquarters took my and others words to heart when we complained about this issue earlier in the April "primary" for this election and have better means to coordinate who's been called between the various calling services now to prevent this.
